Definitely LucasArt games as people mention, I back that up!

Some really good ones/personal favorites are Monkey Island, Broken Sword series, Sam & Max, Loom, Zork (later ones that aren't DOS text-based such as "Grand Inquisitor"), Gabriel Knight, Day of the Tentacle,... there's lots of good ones!

You're not, but I actually find Myst III to be the easiest...and it's the only one not on GOG. Bummer.
IV is also missing from GOG unfortunately. Luckily the physical versions of both have no problem running on Windows 7, at least the versions I bought. IV did require some patching though.

Myst stumped for a LONG time (I played it on my Saturn), but I'm also an idiot when it comes to video game puzzles. I mean, I'm the guy who reached the age of 20 before managing to beat his first Zelda game without a walkthrough.

The newer Sam & Max seasons are great, quirky fun. Not nearly as memorable as hit the road, but they're that Lucas-Arts brand of fuck-yourself-over-proof that everyone else has mentioned, as well as the fact that items tend to be fairly local, so you aren't hunting around a dozen different areas for the one weird item you need. I used to play them with a girlfriend a while back and we had good fun laughing at all of the silliness.

I will admit though, the writing doesn't compare to Hit the Road in terms of quality though. Being able to use Max as an item on anything was hilllaaarious XD

I think Telltale's Sam & Max games are better than Hit The Road in just about every way myself. I wanted to love Hit The Road but found it to be one of the weaker LucasArts games myself.

I didnt think as highly as most of The Secret of Monkey Island either actually. That said, Curse of Monkey Island is great.

Wow, thanks guys, I'm going to follow up on all the leads, but I've started with LucasArts games, I'm hitting Day of the Tentacle first since I'm just testing the waters. I'm Just a day or so in but nothing has been too wild to figure out yet, but with all the random items around I'm sure it will!

I like that it's set in a large but fairly limited space, so that you don't feel constricted but you aren't overwhelmed. I will probably try Monkey Island if this doesn't make me beat my head into a wall by the end!

It is great that these are all so cheap on GoG, for the amount of work that went into them. DotT looks amazing for example, and so do the later Monkey Island and King's Quest games. It's odd how widely taste can shift. I will have to check out the new Sam and Max and King's Quest releases to show support!

If you have any love of or talent with music, Loom is something you have to play. And the easiest challenge level is pretty approachable.

Just finished Day of the Tentacle (had to use a guide for a few bits), it was really good, I'm surprised it isn't more widely known (or maybe I'm just in the dark). It was reassuring that I could basically do no wrong and any successful action was progress. I think I'll hit up Monkey Island now, with the special edition. DotT spoiled me for talkie versions!

I've always preferred my point and clicks a bit darker and tend to gravitate towards the mystery/horror themed games. My personal favorites include:

Sanitarium
I Have No Mouth...
Blade Runner

I've been playing on my Wii through SCUMMVM so far, but it looks like Blade Runner isn't supported. I don't see it on GOG but I did see it linked there for download on some other site I don't know if I trust. What's the best way to play this game? Does Gabriel Knight work with modern machines?
