By contrast the Sierra stuff is full of ways to dick the player over and either arbitrarily kill people because your mind doesn't work exactly like theirs or worse leave you to play 2/3 through the rest of the game before you realize you're stuck because you missed that one critical item back on the first screen and you can't go back. So I'd recommend anything by LucasArts as an introduction. The LucasArts stuff also tends to have a degree of humor at the general ridiculousness of the adventure game concept from the point of view of the characters.
Yeah, LucasArts games are perhaps the way to go. Folks have already mentioned Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island, and I agree. Those two are probably the best introduction to how the LA titles work as well as their respective series. If you find you really like Maniac Mansion, you can follow it up with Day of the Tentacle; likewise, Secret of Monkey Island starts the Monkey Island series, which you can follow through if you really end up liking Guybrush. After that, you can look into Zak McKracken, the Indiana Jones games, LOOM, Full Throttle...and then finish it all off on a high note with Grim Fandango.
Alternatively, you could get on GOG and grab a couple of the free games there: Teen Agent, Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen, and Lure of the Temptress. While I don't feel these are all as good as the LA titles(LotT is experimental and has some frustrating design at times. Teen Agent has some illogical puzzles. FotAQ feels like a knock off of an LA game. BaSS is awesome though), it's a nice way to access more titles if you want to keep checking out the genre. Dragonsphere used to be available for free as well, but it recently changed hands apparently.
It's worth noting that Maniac Mansion is one of the few LucasArts games that can become unwinnable.
I'd start with Day of the Tentacle personally, it's easier and more user friendly. There's nothing major you'll miss out on by not playing Maniac Mansion first.
Westwood's Kyrandia series is friendly, as well as funny and beautiful. There are 3 games in the series and I really enjoyed them. The Neverhood is also a great title and has awesome music and Claymation graphics.
Just some alternate suggestions, since I also agree that LucasArts games are amazing as well.
