Best Adventure Games for Beginners?

I love the stories people always seem to have about old-school adventure games like King's Quest or Monkey Island, and I'm looking to get into them to see what all the fuss is about. I'm wondering where to start to get into adventure games (on modern hardware), and maybe a few recommendations from there.

The nice thing about the LucasArts adventure games is they are neigh impossible to die or become unwinnable in. By contrast the Sierra stuff is full of ways to dick the player over and either arbitrarily kill people because your mind doesn't work exactly like theirs or worse leave you to play 2/3 through the rest of the game before you realize you're stuck because you missed that one critical item back on the first screen and you can't go back. So I'd recommend anything by LucasArts as an introduction. The LucasArts stuff also tends to have a degree of humor at the general ridiculousness of the adventure game concept from the point of view of the characters.

As crazy as it may sound, I think the first Myst game is a pretty good place to start. It was my first adventure game, and one of the first video games I ever played period. Though I was terrible at it back when I first tried it as a kid, and couldn't actually beat it, I went back some years later and had a much better time with it. I think it's puzzles fit well with real world logic, and the solution can often be found just by carefully observing your surroundings. Also by taking notes, that's gonna be essential in any older adventure game you play. Probably most new ones too.

Simon the Sorcerer and the 3 Discworld games have really funny worlds that are a pleasure to roll through.

I think advising Maniac Mansion and Myst as beginner games is a little odd. They are both fairly complex

Sam & Max Hit the Road has always been my favorite.
I should mention ScummVM runs most of the popular oldschool games on all types of different hardware hardware you might have.
They host demos if you wish to try a selection of them out.

I really enjoyed those puzzle "room" SWFs that were popular years ago. Was the original one "crimson room"?

Broken Sword. There are many ports, so it should be easy to find and cheap. Good story and easy to play.

Other than that most Lucas Arts games are great, you really can't go wrong with whichever one you choose.
