I used to think anime was awesome, then realized most of it was crap. I used to think Western cartoons were awesome, and also realized most of them were crap. So I just cotton to the few good examples in each.
I probably do like more Western stuff overall, though. Going back, I realized that the Transformers and G.I. Joe cartoons were pretty terrible... but then, I could count on one hand the number of those I got to see as a kid. I just liked the toys a bunch. I really enjoyed the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons, and watched TMNT but was at an age where I didn't admit that I watched them. But really, the best stuff is Batman: The Animated Series, which has already been brought up, and Justice League. JL in particular is one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Unlimited was good, too, although there were a few too many obvious political slams in a few episodes that I didn't like.
The irony, of course, is that when it comes to gaming, I probably skew more towards Japanese developers. Go figure!
While on the subject of crap cartoons, I almost can't watch anything now on Cartoon Network. There's so much bilge out there that's just not even good or funny, it's just weird. And not "good" weird. It's the kind of stuff I probably wouldn't let my future kids watch. (I do enjoy how insane Teen Titans Go! can be, though. And I have a weird affinity for a lot of episodes of Spongebob Squarepants. No, seriously, the fry cook episodes are generally hilarious.)

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I dunno if this is an unpopular opinion... but I really hate the way cameras work in modern third-person games. I really, really dislike the over-the-shoulder thing. What happened to having it centered? It really turns me off games I would otherwise enjoy... Batman Arkham series, Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider... etc. etc.
Maybe it's because I played FFXIV hardcore for 2 years, and I got so used to having that adjustable camera - which can be zoomed out pretty far. I want to play all third person games like that now.
I'm going to blame this on Gears of War.
Also, just throwing this out there... I like the FF Tactics Advance games, and I think the original game has a garbage story - even the PSP port (though I love the localization of that one). I love the game itself, but it really cracks me up when people talk about its story with reverence. Much like the PS1/PS2 Xeno games... BARF!

I review (mostly old) games at: The Annals of Retrodom.

Gears of War can be blamed for a lot of things. They are utterly subpar at best.

Compared to what, thought? Take out the Chocobo, and the Final Fantasy Tactics story is like something out of George R. R. Martin. Fantastical, but also rooted in real-world historical politics.
I think that's why so many like FFT's story, at least it's why I do. After so many of the early FFs being Medieval and/or Steampunk Star Wars, and so many of the later FFs getting way too sophomoric, it was great to see one that felt grounded.

Oh, wow. Yeah, the stories in the Xeno games are pretty bad. Now, the original wasn't so bad, but the PS2 trilogy? I may have enjoyed a couple of the games, but the story falls really flat, and some of it is downright insipid. It only sounds high-minded because of the religious terminology, but it really masks an awful, nonsensical plot.

I'm quite positive I'm the only human on planet Earth that has played and beaten Xenogears, Xenosaga 1, 2, 3, and Xenoblade, and loved them all.
You can't deny that Albedo is incredible.

Well, you're not alone, my friend. I have done the same. The only game I didn't enjoy was Xenoblade 2, because I thought the battle system dragged interminably, relying too much on setup for mook battles that should have gone much more quickly.Xeogred wrote:I'm quite positive I'm the only human on planet Earth that has played and beaten Xenogears, Xenosaga 1, 2, 3, and Xenoblade, and loved them all.

As for Albedo, he's a'ight, I suppose. My memories of him are pretty dull at this point. Been a long time since I beat the games. I actually enjoyed most of the plot in Xenoblade, despite it going all "anime anime anime" at the end.

To be fair, I think that axiom can be applied to any medium with a stupendously large amount of content. I've personally seen anime series which rival the quality of even the best non-animated television shows.Sarge wrote:I used to think anime was awesome, then realized most of it was crap.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Oh, certainly. That's why I said most of it, and why I also brought up Western stuff as well. It's true in many, many areas. (And also, the SNESdrunk's post referencing Sturgeon's Law.)Exhuminator wrote: To be fair, I think that axiom can be applied to any medium with a stupendously large amount of content. I mostly bring it up because I often hear fans of anime say Western stuff sucks, and fans of Western stuff say anime sucks, and the truth is the majority of both suck. But there will always be some incredible stuff as well. It's just quite rare.
