I had too, until Nintendo came out with the Wii, and stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, and Endless Ocean. Nintendo can still do it when they aren't vigorously masturbating the nostalgic corpses of past glories.SNESdrunk wrote:Just saying it's funny to see Nintendo being derided for not "bringing back that warm and fuzzy special new feeling" when I've written that off as a possibility a looooooong time ago.

It's good to beat one off on the decaying bodies of your masterpieces every now and then, but you definitely need to spend at LEAST half your time making new toys.Exhuminator wrote:I had too, until Nintendo came out with the Wii, and stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, and Endless Ocean. I try not to write off entire genres but I generally don't play "PC-centric" stuff like FPS, RTS, MMOs, etc......
Age is really more of a deciding factor to me than genre classifications though. I typically don't enjoy most games released after 1997-ish unless they're still "retro" in style or perhaps sequels or homages to retro games that I enjoy. I really just don't "get" modern action-adventure type games at all.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Personally I try not to think too hard about it. If I'm having fun, I'm having fun and that's what's important. If I'm not I move on. Some people feel obligated to struggle through a game that's not clicking with the hope that it will. Maybe I could do that in the old days when I had a very limited selection of games to play but I can't anymore.SNESdrunk wrote:Sorry, going back a bit here with this post, but I really identify strongly with this. It's really tough for me to be objective about Romancing Saga 3 or Tales of Phantasia after I just got done cranking through games like Treasure of the Rudras or Chaos Seed for example. It's getting to the point where I have no idea if any of these games actually stand out on their own, or if I'm just burnt out.

There have even been times where I came back to something a year or two later and found that I'm apparently in the right frame of mind to start enjoying it. So sometimes I think yes, it is about being burnt out on a particular kind of game. Other times it's just that the game truly isn't for me.
Like Bone I don't write off specific genres. There are ones I don't pay attention to as closely but if something interests me I'm going to try it.

I will counter this and say it goes both ways... age should never dictate quality. I have a softer spot for 80's metal, 80's anime, 80's movies/medium in general, and 90's videogames, but that's not going to stop me from enjoying new things that can be just as legit and awesome. Time is moot.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I try not to write off entire genres but I generally don't play "PC-centric" stuff like FPS, RTS, MMOs, etc......

EDIT: Maybe doesn't fit with what you were getting at though. There is definitely no denying that some genres are very different between the ages, with some not even around anymore and new ones that may not be for everyone. I don't touch MMO's with a 10 foot pole.

1980s action adventure games are, admittedly, VERY different from modern action adventure games. I don't think I'll ever mistake the look, sound, or feel of the original Legend of Zelda with the Uncharted series.Xeogred wrote:I will counter this and say it goes both ways... age should never dictate quality. Oh, don't even get me started on those. They're awful. Horrible. Pretty sure it's just Stockholm syndrome that keeps me playing them. I mean, all the jumping! It's ridiculous!Exhuminator wrote:What Sarge really can't stand are platformers.
