"shoot the orange" is a fun joke among some friends of mine and I. Lost Planet kind of set that and since then, it's always hilarious when third person shooters with aliens/monsters/robots have gigantic orange blobs for weak-points. Vanquish took it to another level.Exhuminator wrote:All video games are pretty much the same.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I loved the first pokemon games when they came out but my issue now is that they are still explaining the same rules 15 years later as well as having to explain all the extra things they've added. It leads to a very slow and tutorial heavy game which I never find fun. They need to reduce the amount of tutorial and up the speed of play.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
They need to make the tutorial optional. Pokemon in the US is on its 20th anniversary this year. I feel what you mean about it, but I know there's a lot of newbie kids and even adults to it, and they could use the help. A nice pop up when it starts asking, are you new and need a tutorial, Y/N, would be perfect.
Another problem is the franchise has become cumbersome and bloated, at least for a more seasoned (10+ year) player, but for someone new they won't notice that either. I can't really deal with them beyond FireRed as there's just far too damn many of them, all the added fluff of special berries, more gear, and other jargon it kind of sucked the will out of me. I tired the 3DS X when it came out but I dont' think I got more than 1 badge before I quit because it was a huge slow slog through some caves, coast line and other garbage just to find another gym and I got bored and moved on. I'm just poke-casual for fun now, fire up Yellow or Fire Red here and there, kill or capture a few things, and I'm good.

That's Earth Defense Force in a nutshell. Awesome games though.Xeogred wrote: "shoot the orange" is a fun joke among some friends of mine and I. I just got into Pokemon this year. I basically ignored most of the berries and other sundry items and had very little problem going through the main story of Alpha Sapphire. I didn't try to "catch them all" though. I really enjoyed trying to catch new pokemon but there's just too many! Besides that, I didn't feel like leveling up a good chunk of them to get their evolutions in the pokedex either...Tanooki wrote:They need to make the tutorial optional. Yes because no one ever has a "been there, done that" feeling when playing a video game. Everything is completely fresh.Exhuminator wrote:All video games are pretty much the same.

As for FPS', there is certainly a lot of nuance there. I don't consider Amnesia, Far Cry, and say COD to have be in the same genre just because they're played in the same perspective though.
I think myself and the previous poster were referring more to online multiplayer shooters on consoles. If you're a PC player you can pretty much shatter any argument (and justifiably so) simply because of the sheer number of games on Steam. Even if I was a frequent PC player though I'm not going to try 50+ shooters to see what I like. Whether those games are unique and, ya know, actually GOOD is a whole other ball of wax too.
What's generally put in front of me as someone who keeps up fairly well with gaming news, etc. the genre seems like it's getting a little played out. If someone wants to say that's just the genre running its course for me personally I have no problem with that.

As long as you're willing to admit this same criteria can be applied to plenty of other genres as well.Snatch1414 wrote:What's generally put in front of me as someone who keeps up fairly well with gaming news, etc. the genre seems like it's getting a little played out.

Absolutely. For me, I don't have much interest in puzzle games anymore for example. Something like Pushmo was attractive to me, but matching-type games I tend to not even give a second look anymore.Exhuminator wrote:As long as you're willing to admit this same criteria can be applied to plenty of other genres as well.Snatch1414 wrote:What's generally put in front of me as someone who keeps up fairly well with gaming news, etc. the genre seems like it's getting a little played out.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Yeah, I can see burn out being a problem. In the PC world, I've noticed in the last few years that while FPS have pretty much been king since the days of Half-Life and Unreal(I'd argue that they had stiff competition from the likes of point-and-click adventures, RPGs, and RTS up until that point, with Steam's release just cementing their place), they're starting to lose the limelight to DOTA-likes. Eventually it will be just another example of a prominent genre losing favor, like the dominant days of SHMUPs, fighting games, JRPGs, RTS, and so forth.Snatch1414 wrote: What's generally put in front of me as someone who keeps up fairly well with gaming news, etc. the genre seems like it's getting a little played out.
