What is the point of adding your games to this database?

I started down the GOG rabbit hole there and had to stop. I submit a good number of PSN/eShop titles regularly.

Other people might have them as well. It's kind of a collective effort.

What is the point of this database though?

Pretend I don't know anything about RFGen.

Because I don't know anything about RFGen.

Ah, well in that case, RFGeneration is a user-built database of video game hardware and software. The idea is for collectors to have a place to showcase their collection that also tracks things such as UPC, region, title variations, physical media, images, ratings, control types, etc. Users can also add games to their profile's account, showing they own them, add them to a wishlist, or put them up for sale or trade. There is also a forum and a blog component.

The bar in my signature is linked to my RFGen collection.

So it's a combo of "here's what I got maybe we can trade" and pure aught bragging rights.

What Ack said.

And yeah, if you want to add a game to your collection list that isn't yet in the database (this happens with very new and/or obscure games) you have to submit it first, wait for approval, and then add it. But once it's in the database anyone can subsequently add the title to their collection.

I tend to submit games that I'm planning to buy so they're available and listed once I actually obtain them and it's time to add them to my list. For instance I recently sumbitted Petit Novel Series: Harvest December, Winged Sakura: Mindy's Arc, and Clannad.

The site is really useful. Since it's online, I can view my collection list from any location. Plus, people I trade with can view my collection at anytime to see what I don't own yet and/or want.

They also have an android app that you can view and manage your collection from.

Good group of guys over there. Blog + their podcasts are enjoyable.

Ok, so out of my first 15 games on GOG, 4 had to be submitted to the database. I've put in a total of 35 games since getting on RFGen. Ooph, this will take a while.

Kind of. As Bone mentioned, it puts your collection online so you can easily track it to see what you have(including variants and hardware), which is helpful if you own hundreds or thousands of games and aren't sure if you own something that you encounter in the wild. In many ways it's a pretty valuable collectors resource. You can also flag if you own the physical media, the case or game box, the manual, etc. I've used it while out and about shopping for SNES games when I wasn't sure if I owned 'X' game in 'Y' series. For an example, I can't keep straight which Madden games I own, so RFGen helps me keep it in line.

Actually there was a plan at one point years ago here to do the same thing, starting with Dreamcast games...but then we discovered RFGen and subsequently dropped the idea.

Does it allow you to search for a particular game, see who owns it, and contact them to make an offer?
