Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Matured systems and low prices

Post by philipofmacedon »

As we sit just hours from the debut of the Wii I am thinking about what's left in store for the gamecube. As far as I can tell it's been a hundred dollars new for a few years now. While that seems like a great deal for a brand new system with some great titles I can't help but think it should have dropped more by now. Do you suppose with the advent of the wii that brand new cubes will go on clearance? Perhaps the memory cards and controllers and memory cards will continue to sell for use on the wii but the cube itself will be redundant.

If a drop does occur when do you suppose that will be? Between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year? Or sometime next year?

I've got a decent amount of money put aside for gaming but I like to get the most bang for my buck and I don't mind waiting a few months/years to make that happen.

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts and opinions. Also can anyone recommend reliable websites that help one keep aware of deals or buy and trade gaming stuff. Mostly I roam around pawn shops and do the amazon shops/half/ebay thing.

P.S. Does anyone else feel like 600 bucks is a lot when there's so much life left in the PS2? With FFXII and Okami just arrived and God of War II and Metal Slug Anthology still on the way I am in no hurry to see the next gen.

I've never bought a console even close to launch and don't really feel the need to.
Once you realize that their are only a handful of games availible to start with (at high prices), you have to buy all new accessories and everything, it's just not worth it.

I just try to think of all the existing games that I haven't played yet that have gotten rave reviews in the past (or that are sitting on my shelf already). Until I've played more of those, I really don't feel the need for the new stuff.

As long as PS2 costs $130, the Gamecube remains fairly priced at $100. The Gamecube is technically superior hardware after all, so really it should cost more than $130. I'm glad it does not.

600 dollars seems like you could get alot more than just PS2 games. I wouldn't buy a gamecube and just buy the games you want for gamecube and eventually play them on wii, if the backwards compatability is up to snuff. It would be cheaper that way, since you would have to buy two consoles when technically they are the same, just ones overclocked.
I wouldn't be suprised if they move God of War on to the PS3. Yes, I know its gotten a lot done and all, but I would not be surprised if they did it. If you want to spend the 600 bucks well, go and buy all the older AAA titles off ebay in nice condition instead of spending it on 50 dollar games that you will easibly be able to buy for 20 in a few months.

I guess that if you look around a bit more you'll get better Gamecube prices. I picked mine for 30 € (about 40$) being the Mario Smash Football pack (I think over there it's called Super Mario Strikers). I guess it's kind of getting the timing right, every now and then stores try to get stock out of the way.

Good Luck!

Super Mario Strikers in an awesomely fun game. I am really glad that the wii came out because all of the gamecube games that i've been contemplating on buying have dropped in price. I've been eyeing Killer 7, Paper Mario and the Mega Man X collection for a while now. Now that the price has dropped on them again, I might have to make a trip over to eb/gamestop and pick them up.

Depending on where you live, go to a Gamestop or some other store that carries used stuff and just buy a used one, their used and refurbished systems are pretty reliable. I got a used old style PS2 back in 2003 and it still runs perfectly, no disc read errors, no freeze ups...nothing. I believe used GCs are $60.

Also gamestop had Xbox and PS2 games on clearance a few weeks ago, maybe GC games will hit soon if they haven't already
