I started playing Mario and Luigi Inside Bowser last week and I would imagine that I am near the end, I just started doing the bean sidequest. I skipped the others (I never finished the GBA one before it was "borrowed" by someone), so as someone who holds Mario RPG at a really high level, I will say this is a nice modernization without Squares involvement. There is an obvious influence from Mario RPG (music in Dimble Wood is similar to that in Forest Maze), but it makes it its own. I have been pleasantly surprised the entire ride, though a couple of the time based minigames have been annoying.

Choombas are my new favorite spinoff baddies:

@Ack

Things I'll add...

7th Saga = I have to play this one sometime, gotta know if I'm a bad enough dude.

Brandish = Good luck with the SNES version of this. Great concept, bad execution.

Lord of the Rings, Vol I = This one isn't worth your time, or it wasn't mine anyway.

Soul Blazer = What are you doing earning a living at work? Go home and play this NOW.

Equinox = I've been interested in this one for a while. Supposed to be really tough.

Most of the games you haven't beaten yet, I haven't either, so I can't really add anything of value other than speculation. I strongly admire your mission to beat every officially released SNES RPG though.

Haha, thanks! Yes, you do need to play 7th Saga. I think you can hack it, though you'll probably have the same frustrations that Bone and I did, especially if you get unlucky with your nemesis.

The other part of this particular quest involves owning the games in question, which is why I haven't started up Soul Blazer, Lufia, or Dragon View yet. I own a little under half of what I have left to beat, but not necessarily the "good" ones. But since I have a birthday coming up in February and a bonus coming some time in the next few months, perhaps I will try to acquire a couple more.

I actually have the same goal as Ack. My biggest obstacle is finances, sadly. Who knows if I'll ever own a copy Harvest Moon - let alone whether or not I'll get around to playing it.

I'm also interested in someday completing all the "notable" Super Famicom RPGs that weren't released in the US.

Actually Bone, my goal to do this was inspired by yours.

Just so we are clear...Equinox is not an RPG. It is an isometric platformer (like its predecessor, Solstice (NES)).

The $$$ barrier to a lot of these SNES/SFC games is why I just go with emulation.

If I sat either of you fine gentlemen down in front a CRT being fed by higan, plus a SNES pad via USB, you wouldn't know the difference. That said, outside merely playing the things, owning stuff is cool too I get that. But damn if I'll let it keep from playing Chaos Seed or Energy Breaker.

Yeah, I figured. But I've still seen it listed as an RPG, hence its inclusion in the "Unsure" list. I suspect I can avoid most of those without issue. I'd still like to beat them someday...but they can take a backseat.

As for the cost, I was lucky enough to acquire most of the expensive titles years ago. I've just been going through these over time. Right now these are the ones I own that I have yet to beat:

Brandish
Drakkhen
Eye of the Beholder
Inindo
Obitus
Super Ninja Boy
Ultima: Runes of Virtue II
Wizardry V

I really wish I had sat down and gotten through Eye of the Beholder when everyone else was playing it for Together Retro. I've also started up Brandish and Super Ninja Boy before. Brandish I ended up being distracted from by my focus shifting to GOG last year. Super Ninja Boy I have issues with the controls to execute some of the platforming maneuvers required.

Thanks!

Trying to narrow down the SF stuff is the hardest part for me.

Most of the games that have been fan-translated appear to be worth playing.

It's the untranslated stuff that gets tricky. Games like The Legend of Heroes II and Albert Odyssey I've deemed worth playing.

Going deeper into the rabbit hole you find things like Dark Kingdom, 3x3 Eyes: Seima Kourinden, Bounty Sword, and Down the World: Mervil's Ambition. I can probably live without ever playing those. My time on this Earth is limited, after all.
