We were all 30 years younger for one, and most of usnyoung impressionable kids. It was also most of our first video game and especially console video game experiences. Yes, I had played pong and some 2600 before... Video games have exploded since then and cynical adults who have played 100s of games cant compare new experiences that cant compete with wide-eyed kid nostalgia.
I think this may be the very best explanation. I've become increasingly jaded as a gamer. Things I would have thought awesome at one time now feel played out. I mean, for crying out loud, I often get burned out on JRPGs where I didn't anymore because I've seen it all before. This isn't necessarily a slam against that game's quality, it just means that I've been gaming for too long for anything to really hit me with "newness".

Not every game is made for experienced gamers - like us - and a lot of people derive a tremendous amount of enjoyment from games many of us wouldn't consider playing. For example, I gave a loose copy of Mario Party DS to my 4-year-old son the other day. The game is, by all accounts, not that great, and playing Mario Party by yourself pretty much defeats the point. Nonetheless, he loves it, and he enjoys it drastically more than the critically-acclaimed racing game I gave to him with his system. Accordingly, I think we should avoid thinking that gamers like us are the intended audience for all games - and especially games published by Nintendo - and I think we should avoid judging (or pre-judging) the merits of a game that may not be intended fo us.
I agree with this as well. Much of the furor around Nintendo is often that they haven't "grown up", as if they were supposed to cater to their original fans from cradle to grave. Why, how dare they stick to what they do best! Much of what they do isn't necessarily for us, although those of us who still love Nintendo's style of game are very much catered to, outside of the depressing lack of Metroid. Thanks, Internet, for screwing us over with your reaction on Other M.

Games like Splatoon, Tomodachi Life, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, Style Savvy 3, Pokémon Art Academy, and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival just do not appeal to me.

So tell me what Nintendo is developing themselves that does cater to older more experienced gamers. What is Nintendo internally developing right now to be released soon, that does appeal to hardcore gamers?

Also Nintendo chasing children and casuals is a dumb idea, because smartphone and tablets have those demographics locked down. That ship has sailed. Nintendo's idea to start making games for mobile platforms they don't own shows Nintendo is finally admitting this is the case.
I think Nintendo has a lot of properties that are essentially all-age appeal. The Mario games fit there, and to some degree Zelda as well. In a lot of ways, they've always been like that. The only issue is that, again, we're missing some Metroid, but at least they're taking a stab with Star Fox. (I'm not a huge Star Fox fan, but I'm hoping for the best from it.)

As a publisher, they've also picked up some properties that could cater to more core-gamer tastes, like Bayonetta 2, XCX, Devil's Third, and Dragon Quest VII/VIII. (Too bad Devil's Third apparently sucks.)

Now, all that being said, it's pretty clear they're not being quite as wild as they were in the Wii era, but I think that's a direct result of having a failure of a system in the Wii U. They have no real choice but to lean on their biggest properties to limit the losses. While they do still release new properties, it's much tougher internally to justify the risk when there's a big chance it will cut into the company resources and put them in an even worse fiscal position. I suspect there may be things in the pipeline for when things look rosier financially, but we shall see.

As for catering to the young/casual, I'd argue that's the only way Nintendo is going to increase their mindshare. It's not like they can become a mature gaming company overnight, and at this point, too many of the "hardcore" have already abandoned Nintendo anyway. Honestly, I believe that even if they had the most powerful system out there, they'd still get ignored by the college-plus crowd as "kiddie". Mobile certainly isn't helping them, though, but at least they're taking steps to get things moving potentially in the right direction. They've got a better chance working in that space than they do against Sony and Microsoft in the "core" gamer segment.

Blah, lots of word vomit. And maybe I'm being too apologetic for Ninty. Lord knows I have before.

Another opinion I have regarding Nintendo is they need to make their next system more friendly for 3rd party developers to port games to. I'm not saying exit the hardware business. However, I think it's crucial for them to focus more on new original software and less on gimmicky hardware. Hardware that's a bit different, but not so much where it's cost prohibitive for 3rd parties to bring games to it. How nice would it be to need only one system that plays Nintendo developed games and all the AAA 3rd party releases Nintendo owners currently miss out on.

They've published a ton more than that for the Xbox One, ranging from Killer Instinct, Sunset Overdrive and Ryse, to Rare Replay and Ori, to Forza or Kinect apps and Project Spark.
Same deal though, at least for me personally. I thought Sunset was kinda fun yet another third person game. How many of those are out there. Ryse was a piece of shit, Rare Replay is a great value, Ori is a legitimately fresh, quality game, Forza never matched the feeling I had for the old GT's, and as a lover of fighting games I always though Killer Instinct was shit.

My opinion aside, I would still ask the same question as before: Which of these has had people talking since release? Rare Replay maybe, and Ori should get more pub I think. Other than that I don't see the big deal with this list of games.

Maybe I'm being overly harsh, but I'm tired of just sometimes finding good new games. I want to be impressed. The technology today is pretty good. I spent hundreds of dollars for a new console. Impress me. That goes for everyone in the console game.

Actually, they already designed the system for that with the Wii U, it's just that it was designed to be easy to port from the last gen, i.e. the PS3/360. They knew they weren't going to compete power-wise with the PS4/XB1. The problem, of course, is that the last gen died a little too quickly at that point, and many gamers also didn't bother picking up the multiplat titles on Wii U, either, so third parties abandoned it.

This time, though, if it uses a similar architecture to the PS4/XB1, they'll be in better shape because this generation isn't going to be over with for a while yet.

Ultiamtely, I think Nintendo faces an uphill battle when it comes to third parties for two reasons:

1) The potential user base will buy Nintendo's own titles over third party ones.
EA can release the best selling Playstation/PC/Xbox game. It cannot release the best selling Wii U game.

2) Nintendo has backwards bussiness practices and is hard to work with. They are also very close-minded in many key areas (Online, price) and struggle to contact Western developers.

Everyone seems to have forgotten (though, given that we're Westerners, I can't blame yall) is Fatal Frame. For the past two games (four if you include the remake of 2 and the spin-off Spirit Camera for 3DS), Nintendo has owned the rights to the series, and that is (at least IMO) an INCREDIBLE horror series.

Nintendo's just in a low spot this generation. Think about your favorite sports teams. They win a huge championship, and then what usually happens with a few years - they play like absolute shit for a season. UNC does that - win a championship, and then proceed to lose to almost everyone. Then they win a championship again. Nintendo hasn't "lost their touch" or anything; they're just in a lull, and just like always, they'll come out of it. You could argue that the Gamecube was a similar lull before they came back with the Wii. I also think that it's important that they continue to target EVERYONE and not just the "core" gamers, though I will agree that they need to put more focus on drawing in core gamers.

As someone who's played a lot of Splatoon, it's definitely not the next Mario or Zelda, but it is an absolutely incredible new IP that I think will continue to serve them very well in coming years (assuming they don't immediately drive it into the Land of Mediocrity like they did with Chibi-Robo). I would also like to say - and I feel certain I'm not alone in this - that some of their games that aren't made specifically for "us" are still an ass load of fun. I mean, Kirby's Epic Yarn is clearly geared towards children (it's impossible to die and almost devoid of real challenge), but I still LOVED that game from start to finish.

Having pre-ordered it and played through the whole thing (and THOROUGHLY enjoyed it), I want to take just a second to defend Devil's Third a bit. That game is not good. Let's just get that out there. It's NOT a good game. It's not a terrible game, either, though. It's like Duke Nukem Forever - there was a LOT more polish that it should have gotten, but it really isn't the steaming pile of shit people make it out to be. It's ridiculous, and if you've ever wanted to play a Steven Segal movie, it's fantastic. The biggest problem is that the development studio didn't have enough experience, I think. I know a lot of the people working there are experienced developers, but the studio itself has only made Devil's Third so far, and (correct me if I'm mistaken on this) most of the individuals' experience lie in fighting games and hack and slash games rather than shooters (probably explains why the sword combat felt more solid to me than the guns).

The first point fits with what Corn says, it needs to be easy to port from the current consoles, so there's virtually no work involved to get the title out on whatever platform.

On the second point, I can see online, especially in the past, but price? Am I missing something where they're off-base compared to other devs/publishers?

One of the more enlightening articles I've read in a long time basically talked about the biology/science behind the fact that yeah, stuff gets less impressive the older you get. For the simple reason that you've already gone through that period where everything was new to you. Now you're just experiencing offshoots of stuff you already liked years ago.

It also works in reverse where people are introduced to the later iterations growing up and when they go back to discover the classics they don't see what all the fuss is about. The "Seinfeld is Unfunny" trope in action.

I've seen it a few times lately in regards to the hype over the new Doom with some younger gamers finding the original game overrated despite the fact that it did for PC gaming what Super Mario Bros. did for home consoles.
