I'm not debating that they don't come out with a new IP once a while. However did playing Splatoon make you feel the same way as the first time you played a SMB or Zelda game? I'm going to out on a branch with that and say no. That's what Nintendo needs right now. They don't need more gimmicky hardware, they need games that are a must play experiences. Games that start a new era of nostalgia for newer Nintendo fans.Snatch1414 wrote:I don't think they're washed up, and frankly I'm glad they're around. The Sony and MS consoles are too similar. I'm glad Nintendo goes against the grain. We definitely don't need another console just like the PS4 or Xbone.
Also, they did make a new IP: It's called Splatoon. Don't get me wrong I'll be the first person to say they need to branch out more, but just saying they did come up with a new IP.

I don't own a Wii U so I wouldn't know but I do believe Splatoon is very popular, so I'd imagine it's a bit of a home run in the eyes of Nintendo fans.corn619 wrote:I'm not debating that they don't come out with a new IP once a while. There was a good conversation about the Wii U on Jim Sterling's podcast recently. Basically saying the hardware did have some unique uses (like playing on the touch pad while someone else watches TV) and they just marketed the thing incredibly poorly, including the name which just confused a lot of people.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I am far from being a Nintendo fanboy, and am actually often critical of them, so no bias when I say this. But, it would he hard for almost any game now to give that same feeling as the first time we played SMB or Zelda.
We were all 30 years younger for one, and most of us young impressionable kids. It was also most of our first video game and especially console video game experiences. Yes, I had played pong and some 2600 before... Video games have exploded since then and cynical adults who have played 100s of games cant compare new experiences that cant compete with wide-eyed kid nostalgia.

I don't think being able to come up with a original game that completely blows everyone out of their seats is impossible. Hard....yes, impossible....no. Nintendo is probably the most likely company to do it. In regards to adults with nostalgia, I was referring to Nintendo starting a new era of nostalgia with newer and young Nintendo fans. The 80s and 90s little booger eaters are a big part of what made them who they are today. Games that turn the medium on its head and redefine gaming itself is what Nintendo needs, capturing a whole new audience of little booger eaters.Jmustang1968 wrote:I am far from being a Nintendo fanboy, and am actually often critical of them, so no bias when I say this. Minecraft already did that.corn619 wrote:I don't think being able to come up with a original game that completely blows everyone out of their seats is impossible. Hard....yes, impossible....no. I imagine many of the newer Zeldas or Marios would do that for kids if it was one of their first gaming experiences as well. They wouldn't have the history with games that those of us on here have.

I can't wait for that game to be awesome. The level of cognitive dissonance will make some heads explode.Exhuminator wrote:Don't worry they got it covered:corn619 wrote:In regards to adults with nostalgia, I was referring to Nintendo starting a new era of nostalgia with newer and young Nintendo fans.
I think that this is important to remember. Not every game is made for experienced gamers - like us - and a lot of people derive a tremendous amount of enjoyment from games many of us wouldn't consider playing. For example, I gave a loose copy of Mario Party DS to my 4-year-old son the other day. The game is, by all accounts, not that great, and playing Mario Party by yourself pretty much defeats the point. Nonetheless, he loves it, and he enjoys it drastically more than the critically-acclaimed racing game I gave to him with his system. Accordingly, I think we should avoid thinking that gamers like us are the intended audience for all games - and especially games published by Nintendo - and I think we should avoid judging (or pre-judging) the merits of a game that may not be intended fo us.Jmustang1968 wrote:They wouldnt have the history with games that those of us on here have.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I think corn is onto something there. There's no reason they couldn't make up something new that wasn't just pandering to certain crowds. Splatoon was new sure, but not so new to anyone into team fortress style stuff who want it cute with ink mechanics. Tomodachi Life is new too, but not really if you dig into it as it's just a social game and you can find plenty of those around free, IAP style, or paid. Zelda is very very played out, and they're still sticking to the played out design they refuse to vary only now making it a Skyrim style open world version. Sure it's a change, but not one that's going to feel fresh to people used to Zelda or had enough of a fill of open world stuff (or who stick with one because it's years of work like those Elder Scroll games are.
While not persay new Kid Icarus Uprising might as well have been, and it did nicely. They cook something dead for like two and a half decades and made it new just using the source material of the old title. That upcoming Metroid farce is just more pandering given the style, it's trying to draw in the FPS competitive types again...yawn. People tend to like those more violent, not cute and kid friendly. Nintendo perhaps needs to shuffle up their design team, fire n' hire or inspire, as they have the tools and can get or have the talent to make something special. Pikmin proved that though not exactly a flagship AAA title it was very unique and enjoyed by many.
As one certain game was brought up, Nintendo needs their own Minecraft (or Terraria) of sorts that'll suck in millions of people of any age looking for fairly clean to clean fun that begs you to go back for more. They lack this now, they're bottom feeding off a fraction of their franchises and not even milking them a good way much anymore. At least somehow the Mario games seem to have somehow been notably less stale than Zelda but how long will that last.

So did Undertale in a sense, doesn't mean that Nintendo can't make a great original game that blows everyone away as well. Nintendo is too busy rehashing old formulas like Zelda and Mario instead of trying to invent a new game formula. That's all I'm trying to say. Yeah they need to keep making Mario and Zelda games to keep them afloat, but they also need to come up with something new, something no one else saw coming. If the developers of Undertale can do it with a limited budget and a 8 bit graphics style, so can Nintendo.Jmustang1968 wrote:Minecraft already did that.corn619 wrote:I don't think being able to come up with a original game that completely blows everyone out of their seats is impossible. Sigh...
Nintendo releases as many new IPs each year as any other publisher. That many of us overlook them is our fault, not Nintendo's.
