You have convinced me otherwise. Thank you for your sacrifice.
The King's Field games are the best action-RPG/dungeon crawlers I've ever played. I say that after having beaten KF1, KF2, KF3:PS, and KF4. KF3 is the only one I haven't finished yet. These games are extraordinarily entertaining and incredibly immersive.

They are also massively challenging, and would rather cut your hand off than hold it. So on that note, yes King's Field is not for everyone. The best KF to start with is KF4. I recommend folks play two hours of it. If they haven't gotten hooked yet, the games are probably not going to work for them.

On a more elitist note; King's Field finds gamers worthy of it, not the other way around.

If you play them, maybe Exhuminator will finally play some Demon's Souls.

Fine! I just, er, acquired the fan translated first game.

As for the Souls games... I would love to try them if they had a different aesthetic. Everything I hear about them sounds amazing, and my kind of game. But the whole grimdark thing (especially Bloodborne... bleh) really turns me off.

See, I LOVE the dark theme, but it's the "Those games mercilessly tear my ass hole asunder and then dump salt and hot sauce on the gory wound" factor that turn me off of them...

Bloodborne is easily the most visceral and grotesque. Don't let that turn you off of the others though, they're just awesome fantasy with fantastic atmosphere and settings. I would argue Demon's is more "weird" than "dark", in a cool way, but that can be purely subjective haha.

They kind of feel like they could be set in the Berserk world or vice versa (early Berserk and before the weird hell stuff). Admittedly, Berserk is very dark and evil. lol

Yeah, I wouldn't call the Souls games grimdark. It's more medieval fantasy where every castle is a bad guy's castle and EVERYTHING is GOING to kill you. But to be fair to them, you're the one who ran in and started stabbing them first.

If you're talking about the original Japan-only King's Field, it's not a bad place to start. It's graphically and mechanically the simplest of the bunch, and is also the most straight forward to finish. It's highly linear whereas KF2 and KF3 are very nonlinear. KF1 is also the easiest KF of the bunch. (BTW KF4 is a nice mix of linear and nonlinear, it's balanced.) Anyway I wrote a big fat review for the original King's Field if you want deeper thoughts: http://ardentexhuminator.blogspot.com/2 ... eview.html

King's Field III has been very tough thus far. I think it's actually the most difficult of the four PlayStation entries. It still hasn't reached KF4's insanity levels yet, but there's still plenty of time. I've only got 5 hours in so far, but I've already been through some serious trials. From Software really did make each KF harder than the last.

Most recently I traversed and barely escaped alive from a massive hedge maze full of poisonous giant mushrooms and acid spewing yellow demons called "grave pots". I barely made it out alive, and almost all my resources are gone. The really bad thing is I think I will have to traverse it again in reverse soon, to get back to where I was before, after acquiring an item. Gonna have to get real comfy with the run button.

Oh I totally plan to. After I finish KF3, Shadow Tower, and Shadow Tower Abyss. I wanted to finish all From Software's first person dungeon crawlers before moving on to their third person ones. I'm getting there. I even bothered to finish Eternal Ring. :?

In the mean time, I think it would be amazing if we had a Together Retro for King's Field. Like March or something... as in you can pick any KF game, as long as it is one, and TR it one big thread. Either it would convert the lot of you to understanding my fervor, or thoroughly convince you all I am indeed a masochistic madman. Either outcome would be extremely entertaining.
