Arcade cabinet for MAME

I am thinking about building a MAME arcade unit,but I'm not sure if I want to build the cabinet or buy an old arcade and gut it out.I seen an old asteroids arcade for sale for about $200,Is that a good deal for this project? This project is going to take a long time because my funds are low.

Man, don't destroy a classic like Asteroids to build a MAME cab. Wait for a crappy arcade game to turn up.

Also, Asteroids was a vector game. Unless you plan on getting a vector generator (http://www.zektor.com/zvg/index.html) you'd have to get another arcade monitor. If you do, try to get the vector monitor to someone who can use it. They don't make vector monitors any more.

Personally, I think having a real vector asteroids game would be a lot cooler than any emulation setup.

I wasn't going to use anything in the arcade just the cabinet part.I tried to look for a empty cabinet,but they go for $480 that's too much! It is a waste of an arcade,but the older arcades are the only cheap ones to buy so I'll get whatever is cheapest.

I had an old Ms. Pac Man cab that was in decent shape but all of the electronic components were shot. I tried for a while to figure out a way to make it a 2 player MAME cab and it was just too narrow to get a proper 2 player control panel in there. I just decided to get rid of it in the end. A lot of the old single player cabs were just like that, too small.

I like the look of that cabinet,but I'm going for a normal American arcade look.If the arcade is too small for 2-player controls,just cut it and make it work and that's the fun part.

How much do these things typically run for?

Yeah I was never a fan of the plasticy looking plain japanese arcade cabinets either.

Does anybody know much a broken arcade would cost?,but I want to play the newest version of MAME does anyone know what kind of new computer I should buy ?
