Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
at first I figured it was just the old 80 games compilation, but upon reading into this it has online multiplayer and scoreboards? Holy F. Wow.retrosportsgamer wrote:I'm in. I'm still at it! More quick fire opinions!alienjesus wrote:My girlfriend is away for the weekend, so I have the house to myself. I could throwan epic party, but that's too much work, so I decided that this would my weekend plan instead:
I started the day with a quick play of Mystic Quest, AKA Final Fantasy Adventure AKA Seiken Densetsu, mainly to test my new cartridge works. It seems interesting, I look forward to playing it properly. The translation is pretty poor though
Next up was Valkyrie no Densetsu. I finally figured out the weapon and spell system this time. I died on the world 3 boss. I was pretty chuffed that the game had a password system until I realised that it continues you with EXACTLY the items and lives you made it to the level with. Considering I was on stage 3 and on my last life, I figure I'd best try again in the future to keep my lives intact, rather than brute force my way through now.
I followed up with Deathsmiles. The plan was to give myself 3 credits, play on the default settings and take on the level 2 version of the main stages and see how far I got. I used one continue early on because of some bad play, and then used my second on the final stage. Seeing as I was on the last stage I figured I'd see how many it took me all in all to beat the game, and the answer was 6. I get wrecked by the ballroom section and the last bosses.
Vertical Force was after that, and to me, this is one of the best games for the Virtual Boy that I've played. It's not amazing mind, but it's a solid shmup by Hudson Soft with plenty in common with the Star Solider games. Everything being in red can make it easy to miss bullets on occasion, but this is still good stuff.
Next up was Kirby's Pinball Land, which I had played a bit as a kid, my cousins owned it. I think the furthest I ever got was completed 2 of the 3 tables. It's a lot harder than I recall though, and in 3 attempts, I only manage to complete a single table once (Poppy Bros., if you were wondering). This one will take some practice.
The last one I took on was Bonk's Revenge. I absolutely planned on beating this one, but a combination limited continues (the first had infinite iirc?), cheap bosses and really really stiff controls put me off. Once I had to use my first continue I gave up for the day. I don't remember Bonk's Adventure controlling this badly, that's for sure.
Next up is Panic Bomber for Virtual Boy. I still have 11 games in the pile, so let's see how far I can make it through them!

Holy bananas, one of those head in hands moments...
So I busted out my Xbox recently, beat Black, and now I'm closing in on 20 hours into Knights of the Old Republic, only to now finally notice that my component setup was set to the weird Game Mode option (Samsung 40"). Up to this point I kept thinking something looked weird. I use an HDMI upscaler for my PS2 and all my HDMI stuff is not on Game Mode. Well turning that off made it look like I just went from AV cables to HDMI for my Xbox. Suddenly everything is razor sharp, colorful, and looks fantastic.
Uh... well good to know now. Xbox gaming just got even better.
I might have to replay Black now.
Does anyone ever use those weird preset Game Mode options on TV's?

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
The Xbox really was a beast for its time. I always use a custom set up with mine; I always want my colors as neutral as I can get them (rather than warm or cool), and I like my screen to be WAY brighter than most people (idk why, but most game's maximum brightness setting is usually just right for me, even with my TV's brightness at about 75%). It depends on the TV, though. With my Samsung, I usually only tweak a couple things on the Game setting (like brightness, lol), but with my Sony, I spent as much time tweaking that as I did making my Skyrim character.Xeogred wrote:Does anyone ever use those weird preset Game Mode options on TV's?

What, all those games and you didn't play Rocket Knight? It's not a perfect game, but it IS one of the most joyous platforming experiences available on Genesis. I put it right up there with Sonic 2.alienjesus wrote:Next up is Panic Bomber for Virtual Boy. Yeaaaaah, I learned pretty quickly to avoid going underground.ExedExes wrote:Seeing as I would play it till about the 3rd or 4th loop, one loop is enough. Especially if you stayed underground during much of it.Key-Glyph wrote:Totes off-topic guys, but I know someone can answer these.
1) When does one consider Magmax for the NES beaten? It just loops and loops.
Thanks for the info, everybody. I do remember the Elevator Action Debate of 2015, but I don't remember the conclusion (except that success was eventually had). Were two loops required? There was something special to it, I remember.

No, Key. One loop = one level. Five minutes and you're done.

RGT: we all know that it's a fact that ninja games are awesome. But, which series do you prefer - Shinobi or Ninja Gaiden. And more importantly, WHY?
