About the only game I could occasionally talk him into playing was Fifa since he was a huge soccer fan, but even then he usually got frustrated with the controls. On the rare occasion he does want to play something maybe once or twice a year I really have to carefully put on the kiddy gloves and work towards letting him win while not making it obvious

Really I never had much of a problem with my brother messing with my games he never really had much of an interest with them. I did try to get him into playing stuff co-op with me but he usually wasn't able to keep up with me and he was very competitive so that bugged the shit out of him. It's kind of sad so many games and no one to play with

Re: Post your unhappy gaming down in here.
When I was in middle school it was common for myself and my circle of friends/acquaintances to do temporary trades. As in, you let me borrow that game and I'll let you borrow this game. With the intention of always trading back once you're both done with the games. This arrangement unusually went well for all involved, because even if someone ended up with a crappy game, you got your original game back later. Well one time I got burned bad by this process.
There was this guy that rode my bus who was kind of a jerk. But he made me a temporary trade offer and I took him up on it because I wanted a new game for the weekend. We decided that he'd let me borrow Chuck Rock for Genesis, and I'd let him borrow Flashback: The Quest for Identity for Genesis. This was on a Thursday, the decision. So come Friday we swap games and go our merry ways to play new games over the weekend. I quickly figured out that Chuck Rock was a terrible platformer and not nearly as good as Flashback to say the least. No big deal, I was going to get Flashback returned come Monday.
Except I wasn't. I never got it back, actually.
Turns out the turd mongler I traded with, himself and his family were moving far away that weekend. Of course this little fact was never mentioned to me before our deal was made. So he got away with Flashback traded for Chuck Rock. One hell of an awesome swindle for him. I wasn't able to offload Chuck Rock to anyone I knew, everybody else already knew it was a terrible game. I don't remember what happened to it after that, but I still hate that game to this day.
As you can guess, that was the end of the "temporary trade" business for me. I kept to just renting games for the weekend after that.

I had the stupid friend issue once, earliest days of the NES. I had always kept even as a kid my games complete in their boxes and treated them well. A friend I had wanted to try out Balloon Fight.
To keep this short, it took asking for weeks, demanding, bugging his mom, my mom threatening in the end to small claims court sue them for it. Excuses were they lent it to friends, family, have to look for it, etc. In the end I got it back, months later. Kind of...considering the box was lost, the sleeve gone, the manual missing, and the game for some reason since when it hits the last couple notes of the title theme does this loud buzz sound. Never forgotten, never forgiven. It wasn't until the later 90s that I lent stuff again, and only to my best friend who I'm still friends with today and he wasn't a dick about it and returned things on time and as they left my hands. He was the exception, I never loan anything, ever, anymore.

Either you've told that story before, or I've heard a few cases of that happening... that is terrible haha. Chuck Rock just adds salt to the wound. It could have at least been Joe & Mac.
I've never enjoyed lending stuff to people in general. I'm not sure what that says about me, but yeah haha. There have been times, I even traded a friend my N64 for his Playstation for a long time there awhile back before my family got the PS2. I was always extremely cautious though and I didn't pamper my friends about it, but I kept tabs on them. "Are you finished with it?" etc, so they wouldn't forget. When I borrow games or something from a friend, I make sure that is entirely my main focus, because it's not mine! So I want to finish that game up and get it back to them.
Luckily my roommate and I function the same way. We lend some stuff sometimes, but not often, despite living in the same place! I think we'd both just rather own the thing ourselves at this point. Funny this came up though since him and I were talking about this recently, he's got this friend of his that simply can't finish games, and is the type of gamer who has been playing GTA5 for years or something. So anyways, I guess my roommate let the guy borrow Until Dawn, and he's had it for months. That is not a long game. Then his friend had the audacity to ask if he could borrow another game, while he still hasn't finished with Until Dawn.
... that would really boil my piss.
Nowadays I don't really give off the vibe that it's an option at all outside of my roommate. I let someone borrow Asura's Wrath not long ago, he barely played it, and it really triggered my shelf OCD seeing that slot open for so long. I can't be having that!
Something similar to this, is taking a bunch of games to a big party. I absolutely hated the possibly of my controllers or cartridges getting mixed up with other people. I cringe thinking about this now, but I did end up writing my name on the back of some controllers and games so I knew they were my copies haha.

Re: Post your unhappy gaming down in here.
Seems like everyone has some of those game trading stories. I had the same thing happen to me on 2 seperate occassions too, but in both cases I actually feel like I came out ahead, despite it being the other guy who never traded back.
First of all, when I was young I lent a friend Flashback for SNES (which I hated then, and still don't like now) and Mega Bomberman for Mega Drive (which I adored). In return, he lent me Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition and Streets of Rage 3 for Mega Drive. We only traded cartridges, and that same Streets of Rage 3 is still sitting in my unused Mega Bomberman case to this day.
Years and Years later, I lent Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition and Mortal Kombat 2 for Mega Drive to another friend, who in turn lent me Metroid II for Game Boy, and Mega Bomberman for Mega Drive. That same copy of Mega Bomberman is still sitting on my shelf alongside the old box which contains Streets of Rage 3.
I'm still friends with the 2nd guy, and I've offered him the games back, but he mainly plays Total War and Europa Universalis games on his PC now, so he's not too fussed.

It's understandable. Flashback for SNES was terrible compared to the Genesis version. Genesis version had superior frame rate, tighter controls, and much better music. Unless you meant the game design itself.alienjesus wrote: lent a friend Flashback for SNES (which I hated then, and still don't like now

Definitely needed that 6-pad controller though.Exhuminator wrote:It's understandable. Flashback for SNES was terrible compared to the Genesis version. It's weird how much I love Flashback and Another World, but I haven't been able to really get into other games that have that same style and controls. Blackthorne, etc.

I'm right there with you. I've tried other cinematic platformers but couldn't get sucked in by any. Not even Out Of This World 2. I still need to give this one a fair try someday though:Xeogred wrote:It's weird how much I love Flashback and Another World, but I haven't been able to really get into other games that have that same style and controls. Re: Post your unhappy gaming down in here.
I did mean the game design itself. I can appreciate all that Flashback, Prince of Persia and Another World did, but when it comes to playing them I find them unbearably clunky. Not my cup of tea I reckon.Exhuminator wrote:It's understandable. Flashback for SNES was terrible compared to the Genesis version. Should be interesting when we play Oddworld for Together Retro, as that has elements of the cinematic platformer style in it. Maybe I'll be converted
Re: Post your unhappy gaming down in here.
I note that the cinematics are slow on the SNES, but how's the actual gameplay? I can't remember which version I have, honestly, but I've heard the Sega CD version is the best, followed closely by the 3DO.
I'd recommend giving Blackthorne a shot. I enjoyed it quite a bit not too long ago.
