Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Yeah, the Game Gear screen is my biggest issue. If I could find either a reliable, long-term screen replacement or if someone would make a system that plays Game Gear games on a television, I'd be a lot more into the system.

At this point it seems like everyone has abandoned their GG and is waiting for the (alleged) Retron 5 attachment, or something similar that will allow for television play.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I beat 4 Game Gear games last year. The Game Gear isn't that bad to play on when you have the caps replaced. That said, a modern solution would be preferable.BoneSnapDeez wrote:At this point it seems like everyone has abandoned their GG and is waiting for the (alleged) Retron 5 attachment, or something similar that will allow for television play.
Is the GG/Sega adapter out for the Retrofreak yet?

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I always found the system itself quite comfortable to hold. It's just the batteries that really got me. What is that cap replacement stuff you speak of? I know that there were issues w/ the sound cutting out (happened to my old system). Is there more than that?alienjesus wrote: I beat 4 Game Gear games last year. That's because just about every post would be:noiseredux wrote:we don't seem to have a "How's your Game Gear gaming going?" thread so I'll just leave these thoughts here...
"I'm playing- ...nevermind, the batteries died."
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
So my Game Gear is one of the Majesco reissues, so it's actually in pretty decent shape. Dunno how long it'll hold up, but the screen looks pretty good. You know, for really old LCD tech. It's supposedly better than the original screen, but not by much.
I actually need to look into getting a spare dead one that I can hack around with. I'd love to do the screen mod.

I've got a Game Gear laying around here that still works fine too. Maybe I just got lucky I dunno. I don't play it though because emulation is a lot better than the real thing in this case.

Mine works fairly well, but it's clear the screen is aging.Exhuminator wrote:I've got a Game Gear laying around here that still works fine too. Maybe I just got lucky I dunno. I don't play it though because emulation is a lot better than the real thing in this case.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I'm thinking I might grab another GG system if I stumble upon one cheap. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm remembering a lot of great and weird games. I guess I could look into getting 6 rechargeable batteries haha.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I was always fascinated by the Game Gear back in the day. I only knew one person that owned one, and it was because his grandparents spoiled him. Well, I can sorta understand why, given that he lost his parents at a young age, but still. He always had the latest stuff.
Funny thing, though. As powerful as it was, it really didn't have anything that rose to the level of the best of the Game Boy. To this day I still argue for Link's Awakening as the best Zelda, and Donkey Kong '94 is one of my favorite puzzle-platformers ever. Amazing what they did with that old tech.
Oh, but if you're interested in a Zelda-like, Sylvan Tale is a solid game. There's a fan translation for it, thankfully.
