Half-Life 2 getting a paid expansion next month

Post by BoringSupreez »

Source

Mixed feelings on this. I'm super glad there's new Half Life content coming out, and that someone is finally doing something with the Opposing Force storyline.

On the other hand, it's not made by Valve, so the quality could range anywhere from just "ok" to awesome. The fact that it's all made in the HL2 Source engine using assets from 2004-7 makes my expectations lean more towards the "ok" end of the spectrum.

Interesting news, I am playing through Opposing Force right now.

The real question is if its plot is canon or not. Like, there are paid portal mods, but those are not canon, Opposing Force is canon, but Blue Shift is not.

Is it supposed to be a legit sequel to Half-Life 2 Episode 2?

No, it's like the HL1 expansions. It takes place at the same time as the HL2 base game. The story is more of a sideways expansion on the main story than a continuation, though it is a continuation from Opposing Force.

I hope I don't sound too dickish, but I really don't care about this. I'm sure it's fine but it's not Episode 3, or Half-Life 3, or official (at least not stated to be), so I'm not really interested. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood when it comes to Half-Life due to series writer Marc Laidlaw leaving Valve. :|

No, I don't think you're sounding dickish because I feel the exact same way. I'm sure it will be a really fun and possibly well-written expansion, but if it's not Episode 3 or Half-life 3, I'm not going to bother with it, either.

So if you felt otherwise he'd be dickish :P Anyway my take on it: Valve are too lazy to develop their own games.

Eh yeah, the title should maybe be changed. "Fan made" = not buying.

Yeah that was basically the final nail in the coffin.

Haha, that wasn't what I had intended to imply, but I am an American, so it's not a bad assumption.
