Pretty much my sentiment ever since this VR revival wave. Heck I've used head-tracking in games for a long time, it adds to the immersion but nothing groundbreaking. VR is an immersive tech, it's no holodeck.. I've yet to see a game that radically change the experience (without breaking the bank)

Another question that has to be asked: Who will spend countless millions developing a big VR game for such a potentially small user-base? Kinect had a userbase that Luckey would salivate at, and we all saw how paltry its software support has been. Best case scenario is more devs adding 6DoF to their FPS games. I can play that way in Arma for example, but very often I just disable it and play it as a regular FPS.

Seems more like they don't really have to. Kind of like you mention, it's not an all-or-nothing prospect for a developer. If the game can be played in first person, then they could potentially incorporate support. I don't doubt the overall experience will be better with more time spent tuning it...but that'll be a learning process either way.

I suspect it'll at least get major traction for sims (and support from their developers), since $599 is probably cheaper than most multi-monitor setups for that, and VR likely does the job better to boot. It's also a market segment that supports $300-400+ HOTAS or wheel setups and the like.

I've been a simmer since the 90s, would love a full-fledged VR setup too.. I hope the PSVR will be both A) more affordable and B) Windows-compatible (via 3rd party driver).. For now I got a DIY cardboard headmount and using a Samsung Galaxy I get to experience headache-inducing VR on the cheap

Where is TSR when you need him? I want to know if I can run Alien Isolation in VR mode sans the Oculus.. I have tried but failed.

remember when The Rift was finally given a retail price and we all flipped out that it was $600? Well, doesn't that seem kind of cute given that the Vive is now up for pre-order at $800? :|

It looks like at least the Vive comes with everything. I think the Oculus you had to wait to buy the control--I mean handsets. Regardless I understand the prices to a large degree, but unless you're just fairly well off in general I don't see a reason to take a chance right now. This is the biggest wait and see in a long time, maybe ever, for gaming.

Yeah, the Vive does include more hardware. The VR controllers are one thing - the Rift is including an XB1 controller - but there's also the room tracking stuff.

I am somewhat surprised that we're not seeing more with regard to new GPUs being pushed out. We know they're coming, of course, but VR is potentially something that'll drive sales for them, and there seems to be no coordinated effort to have something out for the launch(es).

you make a good point. Yeah.

Hey - sort of related, has anyone messed with any Google Cardboard headsets? I'm kind of curious considering how cheap they are. Ideally, I'd prefer a plastic one though haha. I even thought of grabbing that View Master one since I see it at Target for like $20 - though it's kind of odd that it doesn't actually stay on your head in any way. You'd have to hold it the whole time.

I've used them a little. If you're spending any real money on it, I'd definitely go for a plastic one with a strap or something to it. The plastic version I bought lacks the little magnetic "switch" that is part of the Cardboard design, but I work around it with a little bluetooth remote.

A lot of it comes down to how powerful your phone is. I would not go into it expecting perfection That's kind of the advantage of the price point though - it's okay for it to just be a neat demo. Some of the ones I tried really made the VR idea click for me, so I'd recommend trying it...I just wouldn't spend much doing so.

yeah I'm mostly interested to demo the concept more than anything else. I can't see myself spending over $30. And probably closer to $20 honestly.
