shitty news to wake up to. Posted this on Facebook a short while ago...

I've spent much of the past 4 days listening to David Bowie's brilliant new album and much of the past two weeks or so in anticipation for the new one by going on a bit of a "Bowie kick" by revisiting a healthy chunk of his back catalog (those 90s albums were so much better than he often got credit for!). So, the news of his death this morning hits especially hard - he is easily one of the most important musicians in the history of rock and certainly the artist that had the most influence on many of the bands that I grew up enjoying. He's been a "high ranking" favorite of mine ever since I first picked up the "Sound + Vision" box set in the early 90s, which did a fantastic job of capturing the scope of his talents (it's a great place to start if you are curious why so many people respect him so much). When many other musicians I have had an appreciation for have died, it has typically been long after their career was relevant or productive...part of the sadness at Bowie's death is that he continued to release such amazing art through to the end of his life, and it is hard not to feel greedy for just a bit more...

This one may be my favorite Bowie tune, but there are so many great ones...

Cancer. He knew it was coming. The whole album takes on a weird meta context when you listen to it in light of this news. Particularly Lazarus and a repeated refrain of "Where the f... did Monday go" on the track 'Girl loves me'...today is Monday.

The news that it was cancer and he had fought it for 18 months softens the blow just a tiny bit. He knew he was going and he kept on creating until the end and maybe even played a last little joke on us with some of the albums lyrical content.

Bowie is one of my all time favorite musicians. The man seemed immortal. I can't even process this right now.

so sad. And I echo the "wow, just put out this album on Friday" thing. Just such a shock. I've been a Bowie fan since I can remember. Be it Labyrinth soundtrack as a child, or The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust as a moody teen, to Bowie At The Beeb a pretentious college student... and so on. Such a bummer to see such a brilliant career come to an end. Of course we should note that in just shy of 70 years he did what it would take most artists 7 lifetimes to achieve.
