Is it worth to buy a SNES in box?
Is it worth to buy a SNES in box?
I am looking to buy a SNESbut not sure if it's worth to buy in a box. I can get a SNES system with original controller for $90CAD. If I want the system in a box with two controllers and super mario is $250. Is it worth the extra $150CAD to get it in box?

Not really, kind of depends though what you're really wanting.
Do you feel the need to own cardboard to either shove in a closet or put up as a wall trophy to pay that much more? Or perhaps you're hoping the one you buy if the seller is honest, was just lightly used and stored for 2 decades so you're going for low hours on it? Maybe you want one thats new or more or less so someone else hasn't had a chance to screw it up. Depends on your motives.
3 years ago shortly after I moved back here again just over the river I found a dude who had his childhood SNES (Donkey Kong Set) and I mean everything was there and cared for with gloves type clean (box, papers, all.) He had a few spare games like Zelda, Punchout, Lion King, and a few other discount titles all in really good shape and I got the mess for $80 if I remember right. The point is, you could pay up, or be patient and maybe luck into something. If you have to pay up, pay up for the specific reasons vs quality you want so you don't regret it.
Normally I'm not a box on wall type but I do have it on a shelf as the art with the Kongs on it and leaves is cool and it's in there too since I've had a retron5 for the last year or so now. But if I ever want it, it's immaculate in there being stored for later as cheap chinese junk rarely lasts.
(...or my patience for it since I'm not using it and using a real Sega Genesis lately.)

Those are good points
I guess I will just wait. Im not really looking for a box, just thought it would like nicer and the plastic on the system is not yellow haha

Well if you don't need it, what I'd do is bide your time locally and see what happens where you can really look at it in hand, or find an ebay auction with photos of all angles of it and the controllers to make sure nothing is turning ugly and nothing is missing and go for it. You'll save yourself a lot going that route.

I've had probably 8 or 10 SNES systems pass through my hands and only one had been noticeably yellowed. They're not hard to find loose in good shape. Worst case scenario you can always retrobrite it.n3xtgen wrote:Those are good points

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

I seem to find more non yellow than yellow snes. Also, hit the garage sales, and always ask, if you are persistent you will find a Snes in a box on the cheap. Also, at the very worse, I would not spend more than 100 US$ retail. I see them around here a lot at retail for right around 100.
Buy a Retron and a pair of Snes controllers for it. When the weather gets nicer get out and hit the garage sales. it may take a season or two but they are out there to be found. Most people do not even realize they have any value so they generally part with them easily.
Lastly, always try to leave good karma. If someone at a garage sale is parting with their mint boxed Snes for 20 bucks, do not haggle, just pay it.
Also, never, never tell them you are a collector, just want to play them.
I just noticed, I say "also" a lot LOL.

Good points. If you garage sale, best ones are community if you're there as they open or a bit before because you get a lot of houses in one spot. Depending how many flippers or collectors are in your area will depend how fast it gets scooped up, and any system in decent shape is high priority right at or under a 'rare' or faux perceived rare game along with big bundles.
As he said, pay up whatever they ask especially if it's cheap, that's what I did on the DK Set with the small selection of games. I didn't want to insult the guy, secondarily in case someone else calls/emails between that time I don't want to deal with competition that'll try and snake it cheap to sucker a chump so they can flip it. I do agree in the meantime a Retron is a passable option (the R3 since it's cheap) or an excellent one but expensive up around $140 if you get the HDMI swiss army knife box (Retron 5) that runs all sorts of 8/16bit consoles and handhelds(Gameboy line) but wont' use flash kits.
