I dunno. Joe & Mac and Castlevania IV, played through a good sound system, are plenty bass-y sounding. Often the strings do sound odd, but I dunno 'bout farts. If your farts sound like SNES strings, maybe you should see a doctor ; )

The SNES instruments I hate the most are the electric guitars. The Mega Man X soundtrack, for as well-composed as it is, in practice sounds like a dysfunctional saw factory.

I don't like that Genesis saw-guitar much better. I think trying to get a good electric guitar sound is just a fool's errand.

The NES did the guitar/bass/drums setup best, even without that guitar sound.

I like the track, but I think it would have been better without the crappy guitar wanna-be synth.

Yup. Earthworm Jim is proof of that.

The thing about SNES music is that it was the first console where composers could do anything they wanted, whereas with other systems you still had to work within certain limitations. Yeah a lot of the SNES sound chip technical stuff boils down to music synthesis via samples, but that opened up a LOT of musical possibilities.
