I had one of these over a decade ago, the screen was pretty decent but I could see where they could go Game Gear on you over time. Reading online it appears hit and miss if they do or not. I've also seen some people hack the thing in various ways with minor stuff like a total recap or doing that plus throwing an extra capacitor in with a modern LED screen which looks super sharp.
If I were to go after one, what would be the good price for such a thing that is in cherry or near cherry quality externally as far as scratches that runs well and sounds/looks right? Is it worth paying someone for a recapped system or perhaps the total work up with the new panel and if so what about that?
I got back into Sega in the last few weeks and reacquired or first time bought a mix of 20 carts so far along with a model 1 non-tmss lockout chipped Genesis I'm really enjoying.

The only thing that worries me about LCD replacements is that if the LCD is not the same resolution as the original, or an exact multiplier of the original, the graphics are going to display in a manner that's not as clear or nice.

Ive modded a few of these with new lcds and rechargable batteries. If you can find a good screen, which isnt always easy, it is hands down better than the original screen.

Yeah I've seen them over youtube and still representation and those I have did have the right resolution so you didn't have some weird pixel overlap or some other wonkiness going on to fit the panel or be cut off.
I'd rather it stay stock, but if I were to put up for one I'd like to know it could last awhile if that means it was recapped already if that's all it takes to keep the screen fresh as-is. Sure a modern panel probably could eat batteries maybe a but less, but I'd honestly use it anchored to the wall mostly like I did over a decade ago. It would be the couch buddy equal of the Supaboy I use for SNES when the kid is hogging the tv my systems are on.
That's why I'm asking about what to pay or not with a stock one, stock recapped, or the works with the screen.

Re: Been thinking about a Nomad
I can't speak for mods and reproduction parts or anything, but one of my students just got a Nomad for his birthday, and he loves it. He brought it to class yesterday, and at least his has a surprisingly good screen. I know Game Gears have a lot of screen problems (mine included), and he might have just gotten lucky with the screen on his Nomad, but at least from my limited experience with it, they're pretty nifty and worth a purchase if you can find an affordable one.

Re: Been thinking about a Nomad
I think a hundred fifteen to a hundred fifty dollars is a reasonable price range for a stock nomad in good working order. I haven't checked the 'bay lately, but that was the range last time I looked.
It would be cheaper to get a little fifteen inch CRT and play your Sega genesis on that while junior is using the TV screen. Of course, it's none of my business to tell you how to spend your money.

No you're right, but it's the portability factor and even a 15" CRT takes up more space too and you're stuck in front of it.
Things got ugly in December so I didn't get anywhere near doing good research or buying one of them as of yet. I'm still interested but I'll have to save up a little I think.
