I'm an underdog player and I play Pai. Virtua Fighter isn't as difficult as you think. The move lists may seem daunting (especially if you play a Vanessa in Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown), but they are really situational. What is important is to learn a few good combos and juggles and then learn how to use the other moves effectively.

Pick a single character and learn them first. As you play, you will learn how to stack up against certain characters. Characters like Jackie and Sarah have tons of spin moves, so you know now to try to move around them as you won't evade. Virtua Fighter 2 is probably the most simplistic of the games as it has the right level of strategy, without adding tons of other elements like high ground in VF3, or the very specialized characters like Aoi or Vanessa.

Keep it up though and if you ever want pointers, there are places like VFDC that would be happy to help, although they are very VF5 oriented, there are still a core group that loves VF2.

The key thing for the game is understanding your character's rhythm. You set the pace as essentially every move is delayable. Understand how they move, what their moves do and in what situations to do them in. Get the timing down and everything becomes infinitely easier. It isn't as command oriented as Street Fighter. You aren't doing tons of quarter circle motions or Shoryuken motions and Charge moves are nonexistent. It really is simple motions and button moves. It took me about a month to get decent with Pai and about 4 months to be considered competitive. Keep it up and enjoy!

Kage is one of the tougher characters to learn from the start. I would suggest a Lau, Pai or Jackie as a starter character. Characters like Kage, Akira and Shun are really effective characters, but are very difficult to learn if you are just starting.

I find Jackie harder than Sarah. He seems simple at first, but his stance changes change up his moves some, and that adds a level of complexity. So he's a good step up from Sarah once you've mastered her.

Pai is also pretty good, as you can ignore some of her depth until you're ready.

Kage is really only effective and higher level play. He's tricky for new folks. I never managed to get him fully worked out.

Haven't touched VF series since VF5 ver.C
I have Final Showdown on my 360 but haven't given it a chance. I just dropped the series since 5R didn't make it to the states :(

But VF2 on Saturn is a wonderful game.

you guys have some good enthusiasm for VF2. I'm def gonna spend some more time with it when I have a chance. Funny though, I always used Kage or Akira. So apparently that was part of my problem, eh?

I have used Sarah a bit as well, but she feels more... I don't know, grapply?

So besides "use an easier character," and "learn some combos," any other pointers? Like, simple stuff?

The game is a lot of back and forth and understanding the pacing of the game is the biggest key. Just understand the speed of your character, keep your pacing and distance right and take advantage of their mistakes. It takes practice, but I find the rhythm of the game to be very addicting.
