Seriously - who misses those besides me?
Im guilty of that, but Sony helped with umds! Its like a wierd shaped cartridge with a disk in it. I dont miss the limited space though... maybe once/if they can hold as much data as a disc effectivly we will see them again. I doubt it though.

Also in response to the N64 LoZ games, I dont have any Nostalgia of the N64, I tried them at a friends about a couple months ago... the controls have not aged well AT ALL. Same with most N64 games, the camera controls on most of them are god awful.

How old were you when the N64 was at the height of its' popularity? I'm not being snarky, just wondering...

I know very little, but aren't the SSD drives in devices such as the Macbook Air getting up to 64/128 Gb, wouldn't it be possible to put a device such as that in the cartridges? I know they are expensive now, but at the way memory is falling in price at the moment... Who knows

Yes but price is the real problem, yea sure, go ahead and make carts w/ 128gb, then charge us 200+ a game for them.

Ah, yes, that explains your opinion of the controls and camera.

Trust me, I'm not one of these "you're too young blah blah blah" guys - but I'm 35 and when the N64 came out, it was the shit.

Historically, the leap from 2D to 3D was revolutionary, and when you were playing Mario 64 for the first time you could feel your brain rewiring to think in a different dimension. The controls and the camera were acceptable back then because they were the best we had - of course now they're way better, but in the mid-90's it was an incredible time to be a gamer.

Glad you're open to retro-gaming though! A lot of younger kids are all about the head shots instead of appreciating gaming's heritage.

Yeah, since some of you guys are relatively new, up until about a month ago, Ryan was the youngest active forum member. Since then, I think there's been...one guy who's younger?

Personally, I have two problems with the N64. First, the controllers wear out. It's upsetting to think that someday there won't be any official 64 controllers anymore, but...well, they do wear out at an alarming rate. Second, while it was amazing at the time, I feel 3D ages at a much poorer rate than 2D, so it's a little hard going back and looking at some of these games. An excellent example is Dark Rift, a shoddy fighter that was praised for its graphics on its release. It's...well, it's like stabbing your eyes with a fork to look at now.

Now that doesn't mean there aren't quality games on the console. Hell, I wasted days of my life in titles like Turok 2, Ocarina of Time, and MarioKart 64. I will say in general that the PS2 had more games that I enjoyed, since Vash23n mentioned folks putting the N64 down in favor of that and the Xbox(for the record, I'm not a fan of the Xbox at all. I dislike the 64's controller, I hate the Xbox's), but that's just because the PS2 had more games overall that I liked. The 64 did skimp out on a lot of my favorite genres, so it suffers a bit when I look back at it.

That makes sense. Although I did have a Genesis along side the Playstation growing up, I used to get so mad at Dynamite Headdy  .

IMO it depends on how much money you have.

If you are bit tight then xbox for sure, if you got some cash then N64 is worthwhile.

I can get 5 xbox games for $20 CDN in Montreal at the moment but the n64 games I want are at least $20 dollars each.

therefore at the minute I'm picking up xbox games.

i should def clarify what i meant... my main issue back in that era was that people would refuse to appreciate the n64 the way i appreciated their chosen systems... so strange... different games (for the most part) and owning both or at least allowing yourself to enjoy a friends meant you had so much more gaming to do! i agree about the cameras on the early systems... yes playing mario 64 without that neat shoulder button that just zips the camera right behind you (loz) stinks... i spend so much time fiddling with them, but i dont really notice it anymore. this was one of the first games to utilize this technique and it was awesome at the time... i didnt think about how much i disliked mario 64s camera style until i played loz, which took things a step further in the right direction. the controller does stink though... luckily i have four and am trying to really play one into the ground at a time so that they will last... just from playing a few hours a day for the past few weeks, however, the stick is already jostling back and forth on its own.

and i must defend loz's control scheme for oot and mm (and beyond). you dont think z targetting is a good idea... and introducing the parry (sp?) functions? i love the control scheme for zelda, including the camera controls! i love old retro controllers too, but i cant get myself to compare the two or choose a fav. if i could, id have a lot less systems and would be missing out on a lot of awesome games... 2d and 3d both rock... cant we all just get along!?
