Saturn AV RCA Cables

Post by davidg4781 »

I was at my mom's the other day and remembered my Saturn. Dug it up, brought it home, and surprise! No AV or Power cables!

I looked in my box of cables and I THINK I have the right AV cables but there's only 3 pins. It fits in the connector and the pinout I found online seems to match L,R,V, but all the other cables I found have a lot more pins.

Unfortunately I can't try it out since I don't have a power cable. Maybe my Apple TV one will work?

If I have to order one, is there maybe a better video cable available? I saw a few combo packs.

I bought a bunch of generic saturn and genesis AV cables from the racketboy store before it closed.

They all seemed to work fine. But from the ones that I received, some cables are thinner than others. So if you find some online, try to check the quality of them by the pictures.

There have been lots of cables in the past with extra pins. Just check out some Genesis plugs.

So as long as it works, go for it.

Right, so, I plugged in the power cable from Apple TV and tried out the AV cables I found.

Worked like a charm! "Turn around, you're headed the wrong way!" Haven't heard that in years.

So, looks like I need a new power cable, a battery (I might have one laying around), and some cable management. Before I started messing around with old Sega consoles I just had a Blu-ray and Apple TV hooked up to the TV. With some short cables from mono price.

The easiest better cable is s-video, but it's been phased out of newer TVs...
Saturn has several options. Not counting nitpicky specific versions.

RF unit
Mono AV (scarce Japanese cable)
Stereo AV
s-video
RGB (truly incredible if set up on the right CRT, difficult to use in the US)
Lum fan.

I may be completely wrong, but I believe the AV cables with the least pins are usually first party SEGA cables while those with more than 3 pins are usually 3rd party and after market cables.

I've seen plenty of third party cables with missing pins. But I'm pretty sure if you find a cable with ALL the pins, it's gonna be a third party one.

Or RF converted to a mono composite AV cable!

I had a cable exactly like what's in your picture when first got my Saturn, and it was a regular composite cable. When I upgraded to S-video, it had most (maybe all, I can't remember) of the pins. The composite one was first party, the S-video third party. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd guess it's that S-video has more pins, but that's a COMPLETE guess and is likely completely wrong.
