Same here. The main exception is if there are substantial differences, like how in Diablo II only certain classes are male and certain are female. And even then I try the females first.

I very much play rpgs in character and rarely do I choose a female character unless there are features and themes that dramatically change the outcome. If it is simply cosmetic, I couldn't care less about playing a female.

So far, I have not experienced a single game that dramatically changes based on your character's gender.

If anyone has one, let me know, because I would be very interested in playing it.

Seems like I remember there was an WRPG I played once that gave you dialogue options to charm or seduce men if you were a woman, but you couldn't do it as a man. I can't remember what game that was right now though.

I don't just choose to play as a woman only because of aesthetic reasons, but also because it's even more of a fantasy escape for me to do so, being a man and all. Although I find I still play RPGs the same ways, regardless of if I'm a man or woman in it. So maybe it is just window dressing after all.

Mass Effect won't let you go gay as a man but is totally cool with inter-species lesbianism. I mean, I am too but it's a bit of a double standard. In fact they wouldn't give ManShep a proper gay option until STEVE! turned up in ME3.

Of course all that is redundant anyway as the only correct answers are Tali and Garrus.

Oh there isn't anything wrong for doing it for personal preference, but it isn't really something I prefer.

Tons of western rpgs like the fallout series use the female character to flirt and seduce others, but outside of that, there isn't much of a difference.

I find it strange that games like Arcanum and fallout can change gameplay based on stats or in Arcanum'd case, race, being a female doesn't change much. I would love to see a game where sexism and multi-dimensional characters behave differently around women.

For the most part, everyone is one dimensional and have minor dialog changes.

The most disappointing thing for me in ME was my FemShep couldn't romance Tali. I ended up having three different romantic partners. Liara in 1, Garrus in 2, then I screwed up my dialog choices and locked out Liara, so I went with Traynor in 3.

My ManShep has been faithful to Tali this whole time so far.

When I get to evil Femshep, things will definitely be different.

Usually that kind of thing has parity, like Fallout 3 has the Black Widow and Lady Killer perks for extra dialogue and damage bonus against the respective opposite sex. Sometimes you get party members that are different based on the character's gender (the KoTOR games have that, offhand).

The city elf intro for Dragon Age Origins is a bit different based on gender, but that's about all that really comes to mind. Usually it just amounts to flavor text, and not a substantial difference in how characters react or treat you.

I typically pick a female character too, short of gender being tied to class or something.
