Wii retail disc side scrolling platformers worth owning:

A Boy and His Blob*
Ivy the Kiwi?
Klonoa
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Lost in Shadow
Sonic Colors*
(sometimes not side scrolling)
Wario Land: Shake It!

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is "decent". Donkey Kong Country Returns sucks. I hated it.

Wii retail disc adventure games worth owning:

Another Code R*
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
Endless Ocean*
Endless Ocean: Blue World*
Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked
Secret Files: Tunguska
Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis
Trauma Team*
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

*Strongest recommendation.

I was the other way regarding The Last Story. I absolutely loved it. It was my GOTY. Lost Odyssey is a game I should have liked, but the combat to me felt really slow-paced and generic. It reminded me too much of Blue Dragon, another game that really disappointed me (and I dropped that once I lost my saves when my 360 went belly-up).

It's also the only OpRainfall game that I have that's not an import. I have the Brit versions of Xenoblade and Pandora's Tower. The latter is the nice big box version with the art book and all that jazz.

As far as Dawn of the New World goes, my brother also liked it a lot better than Vesperia. The combat flows a ton better, which helps it a lot. I only beat Vesperia, but I really had to force myself to finish it off. I don't understand exactly why it got so much love, because so much of the combat feels really halting in nature.

I actually thought New Super Mario Bros. Wii was wonderful. Spectacular, even. It was a lot better than the Wii U version, in my opinion.

I'm trying to think of the best 2D platformers on the system. I know Exhuminator didn't really like Return to Dreamland because it treads old ground and is really short, but if you can get it on the cheap, it's a lot of fun. I will second A Boy and His Blob with no reservations, and while I didn't hate DKCR (I was playing on 3DS), I definitely didn't like it, either. Those barrel rocket stages can take a long walk off of King K. Rool's short plank.

With regard to 2D platformers, I wholeheartedly endorse A Boy & His Blob, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Klonoa, NSMBW, and Wario Land: Shake It! (I also really liked DKCR, but apparently I am in the minority there...) Lost in Shadow is OK, but entirely too long.

I am sure that there are more great 2D platformers and adventure games, but I would have to look back through my collection to list them.

Exactly right. If you don't mind a complete rehash it's okay for a rental though.

I'd have to start getting into the WiiWare games to list more.

Ooh, right, WiiWare stuff. I'd recommend Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth for sure. Contra ReBirth was alright as well, but it didn't feel as solid as CV.

Even though it doesn't always feel quite right, Blaster Master: Overdrive was pretty nice as well. The bullet-hell bosses are tough, though.

I enjoyed LostWinds a lot. I've also got the sequel that I need to finish one day.

Mega Man 9 is on a lot of platforms. It's spectacular. And really tough. But I put it right up there with Mega Man 2, or at least I did when I played through it. The older games are a little breezier, so I'm more apt to replay them... plus I'm always booting up random NES games, so I'm more likely to play them there. :P

I forgot to mention Batman: The Brave and the Bold as far as retail releases go. It's not perfect, but it's a surprisingly good platformer/brawler. I'll also third Klonoa, I recently played through it, and it's a ton of fun. And it looks really sharp, to boot.

Yes! That game was remarkably fun and well-made. I only wish it had been about twice as long.

The Wii version was pretty good for co-op, but it's not something I would have played single player.

So I've found I hold another two extremely unpopular gaming opinions that I didn't even know where unpopular :?

I think that leaking info about unreleased games (Eg. Fallout 4 will take place in X place, they are releasing this card for Magic) (1) has no journalistic value, (2) is a dick move towards the creators, who should be able to release their work on their terms.

Apparently this also means that I think gamr journalists should just parrot whatever PR companies want them to.

Sigh :/

I would buy Yakuza 5 in English on physical media in a heartbeat.

Apparently Sega thinks this is an unpopular opinion.

Apparently Sega thinks this is an unpopular opinion.

Just watch, they'll re-release it as a "remaster" on PS4.
