Old posts as new?

Am I the only one who has been clicking on the Show New Posts link, only to find that most of the posts which show up are old? I suppose spam getting posted and deleted may trigger this, but more annoying, threads which are being constantly updated do not always show up.

I'm getting annoyed by new threads not BECOMING old threads after I have viewed them. Something is screwy with this server's database.

I open each yellow new thread in a new tab in Firefox, read it, and then either reply or close it. Do you do the same or do you use a different method?
