OK, so I'm in Brinstar at the bottom of this pit. I have just come through a tunnel from the left where I had to get around spikes and a bunch of bugs. In this pit are three Etecoons which start singing and jumping up the wall of the pit. I can jump almost to the top but not quite.
What do I do? Is there a specific combination of buttons I need to press to get out? I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to do what they do but I cant seem to get out of the pit.

Ahh, this is the walljump pit. In order to make it out you have to walljump. The Etecoons are demonstrating how to do it, but their demonstration isn't the best. I remember getting stuck here as a kid. Fortunately I had a turbo pad that had a frequency that let me auto-turbo the bomb jumping.
In order to walljump you do a spin jump towards the wall. When you hit the wall you want to push in the opposite direction. You will see Samus take a stance against the wall for a split second before your spin in that direction. If you hit jump at the point that Samus is making that stance you will perform a wall jump, which keeps you spinning and gives you additional height. Simply repeat this process to make it to the top. The standard way is to jump from one side to the other over and over, but if you get really good you can walljump using a single wall.
Here's a good video that demonstrates:

Yes, the good old walljump pit ... I remember dealing with it in the blossom of my twenties, such a nice designed part in the game ...
... actually, how could anybody freaking figure out how the **** you're supposed to imitate those little *******?? After a lot of desperate attempts, I watched some guy on youtube doing it and even then it took me hours until I finally mastered this tequnique.
Seriously, if there was any top 10 list of parts in video games that are impossible to figure out by yourself, the walljump pit would have to be number one.
