I really liked Indie Game The Movie when I watched it and the games connected to it are great, but dear lord I wouldn't ever want to work with the guys featured. They all seem near suicidal in terms of the amount of stress they take in while working on these games with such small teams.

Phil Fish definitely doesn't do himself any favors with the movie he seems to be a pretty unlikable guy in general both in and out of public.

Another good documentary to consider for a future viewing is TPB AFK: THE PIRATE BAY AWAY FROM KEYBOARD I found it quite interesting when I watched it through GOG. They actually have it up for free there.

So, finished this the other night. I think it was a fascinating documentary. Fish is neurotic (though affable), Team Meat is nutters, but at least they seem like decent guys, and Jonathan Blow seems oddly aloof. I think it does represent well some of what it takes to dedicate yourself to making a high-quality indie game. If you want to actually do well, actually deliver the polish and the promise, you have to sacrifice a lot of yourself and your life to it. And some people clearly have personalities better suited to the work than others.

Watched this last night.

Apparently one of the requirements to make a successful indie game is to be batshit crazy in one form or another. At times I felt bad for everyone involved here.

Even Phil Fish. But he's mostly a drama queen.

I actually felt bad for him too. There's plenty of negatives you could toss his way, sure. But one thing I really felt was that this guy is really sensitive, and that's a difficult trait to balance in such a field I think. Y'know people have no problem jumping on the internet and trashing a game (or its creator). But when the developer is one guy, and he's spent years of his life on this one thing, it's got to genuinely hurt. I don't really have an opinion on Phil Fish one way or the other honestly - and let's be honest, like any other film I'm sure this one chose what to show you and what not to in order to achieve the highest level of drama. But I do have empathy. And props because Fez really is great.

All 3 of these games are great of course.

But I'd kill to have them create a sequel. Just the same deal: 3 more games, 3 more devs. And Derek Yu is a must. Spelunky is one of those rare games that I'm just always fascinated to learn more about. (I got totally off topic here, my bad...)

I feel you there. Fish seems like the kind of guy that takes everything personally, good or bad, which probably in turn leads to him lashing out on the internet against perceived slights.

Would totally watch a sequel.

Re: noiseredux's Monthly VG Movie: Wreck-It Ralph

NOW PLAYING - DECEMBER 2015:

Wreck-It Ralph

Image

2012, 101 Minutes, Rated PG

Trailer:

December is a month that many of spend with our families, and such I thought it would be nice to feature a family-friendly pick for our movie club. No, I'm not talking about Pixels. This month we'll be watching Wreck-It Ralph, Disney's wonderful ode to video games old and new.

The story follows Wreck-It Ralph, the bad guy from the classic fictional game Fix-It Felix, Jr. Ralph is sort of the Donkey Kong to Felix's Mario. After 30 years of being the bad guy, Ralph decides that he's tired of being hated, so he leaves his game. This prompts Felix and friends to go off on a journey through other games to find Ralph and bring him back where he belongs.

The film is chock full of great video game references. Cameos include the likes of Zangief, Bowser, Q*Bert, Clyde, Dr. Robotnik and many, many others. It becomes a bit of a game just trying to "catch em all" even. And like many great Disney movies it works for adults as well as kids with nods to games of our youth as well as current games. Voice actors include John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Jack McBrayer.

As an added bonus you may want to check out the official Wreck-It Ralph game which was a fun (if unoriginal) platformer on Wii and 3DS, as well as the leaked Fix-It Felix, Jr. "arcade" game on Windows and Sega Genesis that are floating around out there.

Wreck-It Ralph is available on DVD and Blu-Ray including rental through Netflix's DVD subscription and Redbox. It's available for digital rental/purchase via iTunes, Vudu and the PlayStation Store.

If it wasn't for Zangief's speech to Ralph, my kids would have never played Street Fighter.
I relate to you, Ralph. When I hit bottom, I was crushing man's skull like sparrow's egg, between my thighs... and I think, why you have to be so bad, Zangief? Why can't you be more like good guy? Then I have moment of clarity... if Zangief is good guy, who will crush man's skull like sparrow's eggs between thighs? And I say, Zangief you are bad guy, but this does not mean you are *bad* guy.
And to this day, because of this movie, my boys will only play SF with Zangief vs Zangief.

watched Wreck-It Ralph tonight and it was just as good - maybe better than I remembered. They just really nailed it. Everything just clicks in this movie. Nothing felt shoe-horned, y'know? And it actually has a nice story to carry it through. Love this one.
