I miss the days when a arcade port would come to the snes and Genesis and find out what was closer to the arcade. Then you would go to school and have that argument all day long lol.
When the ps1 and Saturn came out it was the pretty much direct ports and I felt it wasn't the same feel. It was good we got diect arcade ports, but the 16 bit wars the quality of the arcade ports added more fuel to the fire when it came to the 16 bit wars

So I just found out that there are legal, private servers for the original Everquest that regress back to the original game from 1999. The official everquest servers out now are nothing like the original, with tons of content changed and mising.
The private servers are hosting around 2k players which isn't too shabby.
I am seriously going to nominate this for together retro for 2017, such a great piece of history. Sure it is rough around the edges, but those edges are what make it special.
The game is designed more for realism than for convenience, with quest givers unlabeled and you have to great them. Merchant placement and guilds are tucked away in the cities in a way where exploration is mandatory. Being a thief in Freeport requires you to find secret passages and access the illicit underground.
I have an ogre shaman right now and it is so much fun to struggle to survive. The game is really unforgiving and leveling is a slower pace. I played for a good 4 hours and am level 2. Not bored at all, but it is crazy to think that in a modern mmo, 4 hours would mean level 10-15.

In Everquest, the wilderness has farms, inns and NPCs that are just there. They serve no purpose, have no quests, but are just there. I am telling ya, there is some interesting facets to the game that are purely world-building and cosmetic that serve no gameplay purpose.

Relax, I know what you mean. I played Everquest a bit back in the day, along with several other MMOs that were popular at the forefront of the movement, like Ultima Online and Asheron's Call. Those little creative pieces out in the wilderness were some of my favorite things about them, and while you were just as likely to get your ass kicked by exploring out where you shouldn't, doing so was highly rewarding when you discovered a tower or a shop or something like that out in the middle of nowhere.
I remember in Asheron's Call that every clan had different areas they would use for grinding, ones they had stumbled upon accidentally. The clan I was in used a bend in a river with a small beach full of enemies, but I discovered another using a tower full of enemies, or an abandoned castle guarded by skeletons way off on the coast. It's a shame the combat in that game sucked so much, because there was so much fun to be had just wandering around.

It is crazy to see those old titles still going like the original Asheron's Call, Meridian 59 etc. There is something about that mid to late 90's that just epitomize the wild west of video games. Now gameplay has become the forefront in compromise to world building and immersion. A lot of games have become convenient and at times, I despise it. Persona Q is about 75% Etrian Odyssey with Persona added for flavor. The biggest Persona piece is the persona fusion used for character building. The other large piece over what EO has is the combat system, which is heavily weighed towards using effective attacks to pile on the damage and not get smashed in return. There are optional social scenes you can see in between excursions which dips into the visual novel bits of Persona, but they aren't mandatory.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I love Etrian Odyssey.

So a girl i've been hanging out with recently just started moving her stuff down to Austin, she has a solid game collection.
....one of the things she owns is an Atari 2600 signed by Nolan Bushnell and Nathan Barnett.
She was showing me some of her homebrew games and indie dev stuff. We also played a good chunk of Freeway. Good times.
