Well that boils down to what each individual gamer is seeking from their gameplay experience.
Yeah I totally see your point as well. It's the two sides of the game development coin really; having a healthy appreciation and understanding of what came before, as well as having fresh ideas and the boldness to innovate. The hobby suffers if either one is lacking.

I think it's possible to successfully revisit older ideas and mechanics in gaming, but it requires knowledge and insight into what made those ideas great in the first place. A developer has to have a thorough understanding of the older concept in order to reuse it successfully. Level design, implementation of mechanics, capturing a certain feel while having the wisdom to know when it becomes derivative; all of these things contribute to successful implementation of older ideas into modern gaming.

We've long since passed the point at which "retro-gamer" became just another marketing demographic. I think the best we can do at this point is embrace the good that's come out of it and shun the bad. I do think some innovative and interesting things have been done within this realm (along with plenty of drivel naturally); but likewise I think that we run the risk of missing out on some quality titles if we become overly dismissive of games on the grounds of "not innovative enough". I think as you pointed out in another thread, A Link Between Worlds is still a solid game even if it's not particularly groundbreaking.

I agree with just about everything you said there. Innovation in new ideas, and refinement of existing concepts, both are important to a healthy gaming ecosystem. I do wish publishers would take more risks on high budget fresh concepts, and in turn more gamers would buy into a franchise they aren't already intimately familiar with. At the same time, I do actually understand the value of comfort food gaming. And to be completely honest, I have a few comfort food franchises that I wouldn't want to see change a whole lot. For example, Dragon Quest is the epitome of the comfort food JRPG.

Bone, or someone, I don't really get what's "fun" about the bump system in Y's 1-2...

I've tried the first two bump system games (PC remakes or whatever), the Oath of something, the PS2 game, the top down SNES one that most hate I think, and the side scrolling SNES one... and I don't get very far in these games at all. The sad part is the aesthetics are absolutely amazing and the music kicks ass, but everything else? I dunno. I don't think Y's is for me.

Don't give up on the series until you've given Ys Seven and Ys Origin a try. Those were my favorites, and no they don't have the bump combat. Origin especially is freaking amazing and nonstop dungeon stomping. ( http://www.gog.com/game/ys_origin )

I also really enjoyed Ark of Napishtim (PC version), but that one has some balancing issues so I can't outright recommend it.

Wasn't Ark of Napishtim the PS2 one originally? I think that was probably my favorite of all the Y's I've tried so far.

Y's Chronicles was the bump stuff. Man it was such a pity to me, graphically the games melted my brain. Absolutely gorgeous stuff and having access to all the musical arrangements was cool too. But that combat? And I went in expecting Secret of Mana or Crystalis... yikes.
