Well, this is interesting.

I work for a local game store. Only been there for about three months now. The boss of my boss comes in with a whole shit ton of stuff as we're closing, including a 3DO with tons of CIB games. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Space Hulk, Samurai Shodown, Way of the Warrior, and a few others. He drops them right at me.

"Hey, they told me you wanted to try out a 3DO. Here. Play some games tonight."

Jesus Christ. And I just bought about a dozen PSP games off of them for $65, including Class of Heroes and a sealed Persona 2.

I mean, I gotta bring the 3DO system and games back eventually, but damn.

That's right, Steam doesn't run on the PC88.

Damn, I'm very thankful someone did let me borrow a 3DO.

Nothing will quite let you know how much it sucks like actually playing it. So far I've played Samurai Shodown, Way of the Warrior and Dragon's Lair, and I've hated every freaking second of it. The 3DO controller is the worst. It's the worst. I honestly thought the Jaguar was the worst controller for fighting games but good lord, this is terrible. Anything with a diagonal has like a 50 percent chance of failure per diagonal input.

Just played Gex, Space Ace and Mad Dog McCree. Still feeling glad I didn't pay for this.

Wow, talk about a 180.

I've been trying the original X-COM again lately. I swallowed my pride and selected Beginner difficulty. Things are getting good now: I've ransacked many UFOs, stopped several terror attacks, neutralized one of their bases, and have started building a second base. Anyone have any tips on where to go from here?

If you've gotten things rolling you should be focusing on research and capturing aliens. Researching live aliens will unlock the ability to progress towards the final objective of the game.

Recently I asked my wife's 10 year old cousin if he knew what a Vita was. He said he did not, and none of his friends had one. I asked if he knew what a 3DS was. He said yes, and that some of his friends had them, although most play on smartphones and tablets. I also asked my daughter's 17 year old boyfriend if he knew what a Vita was. He did not know what a Vita was, and none of his friends have one either. He did know what a 3DS is. But he said no one he knew in highschool had a 3DS because they consider the 3DS to be for kids. He said high schoolers only used smartphones for portable gaming.

Do only old dorks play Vita? Do only little kids play 3DS? What is this life?

The Vita, like the PSP, never figured out a proper handheld niche in the US. So it doesn't really enter into the public consciousness. It's like how if you asked people in their 20's what the Turbografx was they wouldn't know, but they have heard of the SNES and the Genesis.

The Vita is for hardcore weeaboos who want a portable system. After Nintendo went region locked, that Pocky-munching, Ramune-swilling, "This is nothing like real Japanese food desu" part of me was never going to be happy going with the 3DS considering 99% of my time with the DS was spent on Jump Super and Jump Ultimate Stars. Believe it.
