I'm not sure how prevalent it is. My Master System's gamepads had the sideways cord thing going on though. It was a USA console that I obtained in 1987 or thereabouts. It still works and it looks just like this:

She's still sexy after all these years.
Come to think of it, I can't remember if my Master System controllers have cords coming out of the sides or the top. They have been in a drawer since the day I got my Master System (got mine on ebay... I think?).

I am going to check.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

My SMS controller doesn't have the little screw in nub thing either - the d-pad is totally flat.

Maybe it's just the early controllers.

I've regularly come across both types of controllers in the states. In my experience, the one's with the cord coming out of the side have always had the section for the stick (although all the pairs I've come across were missing the actual stick) and were also particularly prone to issues with the buttons failing. The ones with the cords coming from the top have the flat d-pad and have also been substantially more reliable.

My SMS controller cords come out of the top of the pad. My controller also does NOT have the place for the thumbstick in the middle of the d-pad. That horrible, squishy d-pad.

I'm still going to use my Genesis controller.

Actually the best Master System controller was this:

It was meant for "sports" games or whatever, but it was great for Fantasy Zone II and Alien Syndrome. Basically any game with X and Y axis movement you wanted this guy.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

^I have that thing and absolutely adore playing Space Harrier with it. Never thought of trying it for the Fantasy Zone games. It also is pretty fun for the sports games, although I don't think they're particularly stellar.

That looks like a fun controller, not sure I could justify the price for one though.

Such a weird word to use to describe anything IMO. I think I only use it to be sarcastic (and as a one word sentence).

Currently, I only own Great Baseball (played like once), but wouldn't mind trying Great Ice Hockey, if only to see how much better Ice Hockey (NES) is by comparison.

Looking to maybe start playing Ys: The Vanished Omens. Only game in the series that I've played is Wanderers from Ys on SNES (which I know is quite different). But I've always wanted to get into the series.
...just another lost soul...

I've only played one sports game on the Master System that I enjoyed:

Ys: The Vanished Omens is awesome, of course, but slow and grindy. Other (more modern) ports move along at a much more agreeable pace.

Avoid the Famicom Ys at all costs.
