The ATGames units even the newest with MK1-3 featured isn't perfect. Each generation they very very very slightly tweak the quality, but keep failing on 2 HUGE issues.
1) AUDIO which is already discussed
2) SAVE RAM -- They refused to add the ability to save games
The #2 is very damning, especially the system that takes carts will not allow a game with save (like Phantasy Star 4) to save to its own cart! STUPID!
Other than that it's solid but a small supply of games will have some minor display problems and in a few cases they are game breaking. I haven't tried mine yet with a SD card but I had the first one that took the SD and the background in Contra on stage1 wouldn't scroll so you were stuck unplayable. If you're fine with no battery saving and contra being busted it's a really good system. The visuals due to that screen are very very good, they play at a steady pace, and the controls on the device are comfy too. Depending how much the audio will tweak you off (per game basis) it's not something I'd write off unless you're an RPG fan who needs the battery. Rumor has it *yet again* next years 2016 model will save but the MK one was supposed to as well as their mock up image no their website showed a 'save' button on top of it like they allowed save states as a hack to get around their broken code.
Now if you're looking at the SMS+GG handheld they made in the last few years, that thing won't take a SD card but it has 30 games (all Sega, no fluff) and they run amazingly well and the audio isn't broken either. It's quite solid if you want a basic SMS/GG fix without sinking into a new system and a stack of games but obviously you're stuck with what it has but it lacks the problems the Genesis one does with the problems mentioned.

Re: Cheaper Versions of the Nomad
Nice! I might have to get one then (well... maybe both the Genny and the SMS/GG one). The save thing doesn't really bother me since I'm not much into RPGs. It does mean no Landstalker or Beyond Oasis (which I do like) but that's OK.Tanooki wrote:The ATGames units even the newest with MK1-3 featured isn't perfect. The sound thing doesn't bother me because I would use it on mute 95% of the time. Hell, most of my 3DS playing happens on mute while the wife is watching something on Hulu/Netflix/Amazon/HBOGo that I don't care about.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Re: Cheaper Versions of the Nomad
My experience with the AtGames handhelds and their equivalents has been mostly negative. Nobody's ever really done a Genesis-on-a-chip clone that's worth a damn.
That Master System & GG thing looks nice. I'd pick one up if I could find it cheap.

Well if you can get luckier with it the MS+GG one will cost you $30 shipped if you jump on it and no one else does NEW, used probably $10 under would be really nice.
Re: Cheaper Versions of the Nomad
OK so I got one of these handhelds with the 3 mortal kombat games. Wish they had more genesis titles instead of those other crappy games. It makes no sense why the sound is that bad in this day and age. It's not like they are trying to get the music right for a final fantasy 7.
Besides that the games are pretty good for a handheld and should keep me busy for my hour lunch breaks at work.
Just a question though, if I downloaded sonic on an SD card will the sound and game overall be better than the game in the system.

Nope same bad audio generator, it's all the same emulation core. Some games are just really off key and others aren't or are just slightly so many wouldn't even notice it.
As I said the worst of it are a few random games won't run and battery backed games won't save which really is inexcusable considering the SD card slot or a legit cartridge in the console version.
