I often see those with a more liberal mindset such as yourself denounce or say negative things about Christianity, yet often defend Islam.[...]But how do those progressives who defend Islam come to terms with their very non progressive beliefs and practices, and often praise its virtues?

They don't come to terms with it.

It's unfair to say it but ultimately I think it's all about partisan politics, an uncritical defense of their rethoric (privilege,punching-up) and the ages old obsession of the left with "Sticking it to the man". The actual philosophical content of Islam is ignored, nobody brings it up for analysis of it except when it comes to the same two or three topics.

I've actually found that moderates tend to be the more accepting, since a great many of them are more willing to look at both sides. But that might just be me.

As Bogus said, the more someone tries to label themselves, the more they lean towards one side or the other. And of course, the closer you get to the end of one side or the other, the more crazies you find.

But invalidate my experiences because you don't like them. That's fine. It's what 90% percent of my life is, and by existing I offend a large portion of people, so please, continue doing it.

Just gonna let everyone know that we are all human beings and we are all mortal. At times we may have our good days and at times we may have our bad days. We get caught up in some horrible practices that skew our perception of the world and at times, we realize the errors in our ways and admit fault. We all live and we all die and no matter what we call ourselves, you can't change that fact. Accept your mortality and just stop hating. Life is too short to be so upset.

Y'all be acting crazy. An, "Us Vs. Them," mentality gets you nowhere in the world and any attempt to hold on to that lessens yourself.

I'm guessing Flake is questioning the specifics of the story. The way you present it is the following went down:

"Are you going to the gay wedding this weekend?"
"No."
<spit> <punch>

And I'm guessing Flake thinks there's a richer picture that, while not justifying, at least explains the confrontation.

Here's the breakdown.

Visit new church, meet people, get introduced to Doug and Todd. (not real names)

Doug "Oh hey, you should come out to Todd's wedding!"

"Ahh, thanks, but I wouldn't be comfortable, I don't know him or the girl".

Doug "Woah there, Todd's gay."

"Oh, ok. Well, I don't know Todd or his man, I wouldn't be comfortable."

Todd "C'mon, it'll be fun."

"Sorry, not really interested"

Todd "Is because I'm gay? Is it because it's a gay wedding?"

I start to respond, don't get a word out before Doug aggros.
Doug "What the hell you homophobic redneck asshole, gays can't get married?"
Doug then spits in my face.

Todd "Doug, what the hell? Calm down"

Someone who knows Doug comes up to see what is going on. I start walking away, Doug says something, then proceeds to punch the back of my head. He gets pulled away by others, I leave.

But I imagine Flake won't accept this either.
