I think the poster above me hit on it; the primary source of innovation in the last console generation wasn't in the games themselves, it was in the business model and how we got the games.
The previous generation featured the rise of services like Steam and GOG as mainstream digital distribution hubs. Xbox Live, PSN, and the eShop did the same thing in the console realm. We also saw the advent of things like DLC and F2P. Sure, some of this stuff was around before that time but it wasn't widespread and hardly mainstream.
To me, that's where the innovation was going on during the 360/PS3/Wii generation. The industry was experimenting with new business models and new distribution systems. A lot of that growth and experimentation are still happening today. Only time will tell which parts stick with us for the long term and which parts were just evolutionary dead ends along the way.

I was a big fan of the Saints Row series, I think they did a lot of innovative stuff. Also minecraft was very innovative, I like the PC version better, but they do have a Xbox 360 version.KayJay wrote:As in, Wii/PS3/360 Gen.
I have a couple, but at the forefront are Scribblenauts and Portal. Both have never been done before, and were truly unique and worth playing for the concept alone. They can best be described as puzzle games, but they lack genre, honestly.
What about you? what is your favorite game that shook things up last gen?
