What was the last movie you've seen?

Been catching movies at the mall since the Cinema does $5 movies all day Tuesday. Last two I saw were The Last Witch Hunter and Bridge of Spies.


The Last Witch Hunter

The Last Witch Hunter is probably one of Vin Diesel's worst movies yet . I went in not expecting much but it's just all over the place. The effects are pretty well done but there is a lot of obvious CGI elements which was a big turn off for me at times. I can't really blame the cast they all did pretty decent jobs with what they were given aside from Elijah Wood who was horrible, but luckily only had around 15 minutes of screen time even though he is a key character to the plot . The real stinker here is the story it sucks there just isn't much to it and it drags at times. The twists are also really obvious and the ending is plain idiotic as well.

If you like Vin Diesel he did a decent job with the character and there are a few moments that make the film worth watching. However I wouldn't advise anything above a Red Box rental the movie isn't worth owning. Wouldn't surprise me if it hit Netflix in the next year or so.


Bridge of Spies

Bridge of Spies on the other hand is great they did an awesome job with the characters and the Cold War atmosphere. Plus Tom Hanks gives a great performance as usual and really keeps the movie from dragging thanks to his humor. Don't go in expecting any action sequences though this movie is all about political maneuvering and negotiation. There aren't any action sequences and most of the suspense is built up around legal drama and the tensions between the East and West powers. Definitely a must see if you are a fan of Historical or Legal dramas I highly recommend it. This is probably the best movie I have seen in 2015.

With a metascore of 35 it's bound to be rubbish, but apparently the kerosene guy still has his fanbase explaining the absurdly generous use ratings.

My wife and I took our 10 year old daughter to see Peanuts the Movie this past weekend. It was a great movie and a breath of fresh air from all the violent, zombie apocalypse, Armageddon is nigh type media out. Not knocking that genre at all, but it was nice to take in a truly peaceful and serene movie.

Hitler: The Last Ten Days

Yes that's Joss Ackland (Lethal Weapon 2) looking much younger in this 1973 film. It doesn't hold a candle to Der Untergang unfortunately.. But that immortalised meme scene is present here and intact, albeit not as impactful.

ZEIRAM 2

It's been years since I've seen Zeiram 1 so I can't really compare the two, though I can say that the "widescreen" image is really just a black-barred 4:3 image. Other than that more of the same.





It's the 21st Anniversary Edition, which is in widescreen (one the main reasons for buying this particular release), but... like Zeiram 2 it was just a black-barred 4:3 image, which means that watching it on a widescreen TV means that there'll be black bars all around the screen! Thankfully I was watching it on my Xbox 360 so I just changed the display setting and switched the picture to stretch (iirc).

Still on of my fave Troma films.

Kaze Tachinu - The Wind Rises


Billed as Hayao Miyazaki's final animated film (we will see), he pulled out all the stops creating a heavily fictionalized biopic of Jiro Horikoshi's life. For those who do not know, Jiro Horikoshi was an Japanese aeronautical engineer from roughly 1930 to 1982 when he passed. He created the fabled Mitsubishi A6M Zero Carrier Aircraft (known by most Americans as the fighter used in the attack on Pearl Harbor). But you can tell how passionate Miyazaki was in his creation of this film. The best allusion I can make is that The Wind Rises is like Miyazakis version of a Kubrick film in that every frame is a painting. There is an incredible amount of detail in the most minute scene. The story is heart wrenching. Jiro's rise is told through dreams interspliced with his accomplishments in school and life. Without going into details on the story, it does have slow parts, but the score and art direction more than make up for it. Two hours pass and you think it has been mere moments.

English voice cast does not disappoint. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and Martin Short, play the main characters. But the star of it all was Stanley Tucci playing Giovanni Caproni in many of the dream sequences. To me, this is Tuccis best work. He embodies everything known about Caproni's personality and makes the character so believable it is as if he is speaking to you and not Jiro. The downside to the dub is that several lines are spoken in French or German and are not subtitled on the fly. So without subtitles on you will miss a few lines.

Do not go in expecting something like Ponyo, Spirited Away, or Nausicaa/Mononoke, this is Miyazaki doing something more like Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies. It is not as dark as Fireflies, but it is a standout movie in his repertoire and simply haunting.
