I was going to try and get into Quake again before Fallout 4 hit, but yeah... didn't make it in time.
I remember having trouble getting it to run well though on modern systems. Are there good source ports or something?
Either way yeah, I have to be that guy and say playing 10 minutes of Quake just makes me want to immediately play more hours of Doom instead.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I know what you mean about wanting to play Doom. I have Final Doom sitting on my GOG account, but upon firing it up I discovered I'm gonna have to do something about the resolution. That, and I need to figure out the controls again, it's been so long.Xeogred wrote:I was going to try and get into Quake again before Fallout 4 hit, but yeah... didn't make it in time.

I actually went with tanooki's advice and installed quakespasm over on Sourceforge. It makes things run like a dream, though there are other options. But the versions on Steam and GOG have issues, like problems in the Options menu for configuration. And switching resolutions is a pain in the butt.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Should be there by Friday. I am SO looking forward to reading your war journal going through this game. People be like GRAW? That wasn't hard WTF. Not knowing the PC version is utterly completely different than the console ones.Ack wrote:since I'm waiting for GRAW to arrive
Since you seem to be on a mission to play PC FPS games you missed in the past Ack, I want to recommend these oldie but goodies to you:
Gunman Chronicles
-Very underrated FPS written off as "just a Half-Life mod", but it is sooo much more than that. Space cowboys versus alien dinosaurs and a SHODAN-esque antagonist, plus you can customize your own weapons. I had a ton of fun with this underdog.
Kingpin: Life of Crime
-Be a thug in thug land, violence is the way to win. However this game has lite-RPG elements and a dialogue system to boot. If you have a dark sense of humor it's hard not to love this one. Has perhaps the best flamethrower ever.
Soldier of Fortune
-You want the Gold or Platinum version of this. Extremely gory shooter where you play as a mercenary hired to stop some terrorists or whatever. The story hardly matters, it's the furious brutal shooting that's the point here. Some of the best FPS combat modeling and action I've ever played. (However stay away from the sequels, they suck.) Made by Raven so you know it's good!
The Operative: No One Lives Forever
-It's like Austin Powers as a sexy 007 lady. 60s cold war era shenanigans. Lots of wacky weapons and items to use. FANTASTIC sense of humor, made me lol many times. The deadpan cutscenes are just perfect. (Stay away from the sequel though, it sucks.)
Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force
-Easily the best Star Trek FPS ever made. Totally captures the atmosphere of the show, and makes you feel like you're really part of the story. Great combat and graphics and damn those Borgs! If you enjoy Star Trek don't miss this. (The sequel is actually OK, not as good as the first, but worth playing.) Made by Raven so you know it's good!
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I actually own some Quake collection on disc, think it was like the last physical PC release I ever bought. I guess that's good since you say the Steam and GOG versions are wacky (I thought the same about Steam Doom).
I usually go with ZDoom for Doom. I liked Doomsday a bit back in the day too. Even the console versions are great though, like the more recent PS3 Doom Master Collection (includes TNT, Plutonia, and the originally XBLA exclusive episode).
Speaking of running like a dream, I ran through Doom 64 EX recently and it was incredible:

Originally played it with the Absolution port, but yeah EX is even better.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
Yeah, I love playing FPS. I've put time into quite a few over the years, gotten to play multiplayer with some of the world's best players, and have always loved putting bullets into the face of mine enemies. But no matter how many I play, I keep discovering more to try out.
I'm aware of all five of those that you mentioned, Exhuminator, but unfortunately have only gotten to spend time with two. I actually own both Kingpin and No One Lives Forever(that backlog I keep complaining about...). Kingpin I've started but didn't get a feel for and ended up moving on to something else. No One Lives Forever...just never felt comfortable to me. I played about half of it before quitting to go on to something else.
Gunman Chronicles I've only been aware of in a cursory way but know little about other than it's a Half-Life mod. Considering how much time I've put into other Half-Life mods like Action Half-Life, They Hunger, Team Fortress Classic, Natural Selection, Sven Co-op, and even Ricochet and Earth's Special Forces, I'd be more than willing to give it a go. Soldier of Fortune and Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force are both games I've been wishlisting and asking to see end up on GOG(I was really hopeful for Elite Force when they started putting up other Star Trek games. I've also been begging for Klingon Honor Guard). I love this genre, and I want to keep checking out all of the games available in it.

Keep in mind that while it is a mod, it's a total conversion mod. The game doesn't play or feel like Half-Life, and actually makes changes to the internal code of the engine itself. It really is its own game.Ack wrote:Gunman Chronicles / other than it's a Half-Life mod.
This is one FPS I think you would really truly love. If you can't find it digitally, check out eBay or Amazon for a used copy man. By hook or crook, I sincerely think you should get your mitts on this one:Ack wrote:Soldier of Fortune
Anyway I'll let you guys get back to talking about Quake now.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I have a general rule for the genre that an FPS game is only as good as its shotgun. Soldier of Fortune has a beast of a shotgun. Yeah, I want to play that...Exhuminator wrote:This is one FPS I think you would really truly love. If you can't find it digitally, check out eBay or Amazon for a used copy man. Yeah, at this point it's the only Quake I haven't beaten. I figure it's about time I paid my dues. Plus I want its head on my wall.Exhuminator wrote:Anyway I'll let you guys get back to talking about Quake now.

Soldier of Fortune was freaking amazing. They definitely need those on GOG.

I'm playing Metro 2033 at the moment. It's pretty cool but I enjoy fighting other humans far more than fighting the mutants. The mutants are just bullet sponges.
I plan to get Far Cry 4 in the near future since I just upgraded my GPU. I really should get FC3 too - I never finished that one (PS3 YLOD).
The new Wolfenstein game looks pretty cool too.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
I don't remember if it was 2033 or Last Light, but there was one segment in the Metro games where you have a timed survival against Nosalies, and it was the worst part of the game. Like you said, bullet sponges and they do a lot of damage. I eventually got practiced enough at it that I could run to each spawn point and kill one just as it arrived until they started arriving too fast, then it was just run my ass off.
