@Exhuminator
Well, your responses convinced me of one thing: instead of a discussion it's going to be you telling everyone why you are right in a snarky tone. This thread was fun.

I'm still not sold on Ingress at all, when the biggest innovation appears to be adding a physical component to (mostly) pre-existing gameplay.

The others would be definitely worth discussing, if I was sticking around. I'm not.
Cheers,

Aww come on now, my responses were meant to be objective not snarky. Just because I have strong opinions doesn't mean they're right! If anyone wants to believe Wii Sports was the most innovative game from last generation, then that's perfectly understandable and possibly even correct.

What do we mean by innovation in this context?

Lol, sorry! I wasn't clear enough on the definition.

What i mean is a game which, regardless of popularity, made a substantial impact on game design, and was an all-around creative game.

If a game changed an entire genre, like GTA or something, than that counts.

Also, Hybrid games are highly encouraged, like Mirror's Edge (FPS platformer), or Portal (FPS Puzzle game).

@Exhuminator, Fun fact: the people who made Narbacular Drop is made by the same people who made Portal. Valve picked them up after they saw the amazing job they did.

@Tanooki, I'm glad Uncharted 2 gets love gets love in the Retro Gaming community. It's truly an amazing game. :D

BTW, this is a great topic. :D glad you guys are enjoying it. :P

Hah evil, I'd call that the de-evolution turning point of a game of the last gen. Once they figured they could just send it, then beat you to death with hundreds (or more if you're nuts or an addict) with IAP and DLC charges it was pretty much all over for lots of games.

Actually I'm looking at what you posted, and I'd say that it really is an interesting and innovative idea that Ingress puts forth. It might be too early to tell how influential it actually is(as opposed to your earlier choice, Infiniminer, which has an influence that is impossible to deny), but damn if it isn't a spectacular way to combine audience participation, social media, video games, and modern navigational apps and tech on an unprecedented scale.

I'm glad you think so Ack.

@ejamer - I went back and read my posts and I guess they were a bit snarky. Sorry about that man. Snarkiness is built into my bones, it's nothing personal!

I should apologize too - I'm have a bit of a shit day (pardon the language) and just not reading or reacting to things well. That is: it very well could be me, not you, with the issue.

Sorry for being a dick about it.

But isn't Wiimotion just a glorified powerglove?

As much as graphical fidelity and development costs ballooned between 6th and 7th gens, we saw genuine decline in Japanese game-making, a risk-averse consolidated publishing doctrine, a birth of a sustainable indie scene, Steam as a real provider of digital goods in place of physical copies, and open-world games (where players tell their own stories) taking over the landscape, kickstarted by the likes of DayZ and Minecraft, and let's not forget crowd-funding! A lot of things have certainly changed between 2005 and now.

Perhaps the DayZ mod was the most innovative "interim" game after all :/
