Oh no! Don't tell me that!

I am playing through Metro 2033 Redux right now and loving it. I was planning on picking up with Last Light when I got to the end of 2033.

So basically, I don't need to play STALKER until after the Metro series, then.

I forget the story but I think the two series have some of the same devs attached. Some of the STALKER people went on and did Metro.

Since you'll potentially be going from Metro to STALKER, I wonder what your experience will be. The other way around didn't work out for me at all haha. The Metro games seemed almost too linear and claustrophobic, even though I loved those sections in STALKER, it was just a lot different. That and the combat felt very weightless, the gun sounds were weird, etc. On the other hand... STALKER's combat is mindblowing. It's really clunky and hard at first with just a pistol or something, but once you start getting better gear, man it clicks so hard. Best combat in the whole genre to me next to the likes of FEAR, Half-Life 2, etc.

I remember being blown away by the ballistics model, which actually calculates velocity versus gravity in such a way that sniping requires trajectory arc allowance.

Exactly. Headshots got insanely easy for me later on when I had really good weapons, but it was done in such a way that it never stopped feeling consistently amazing and rewarding. I can't think of many other games with bullet mechanics this good.

Yeah, arcing my weapon to account for bullet drop was something I totally adored about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s wide open spaces. But then, I also enjoyed running up against mutants using only the knife or a shotgun at close range. Truth be told, I got a kick out of finding a high perch and just watching things move through a pair of binoculars. Man, that series...

I remember using my binoculars to see a far away pack of mutant dogs, and then wounding one with a long range sniper shot. The dog was confused as to what attacked it so it attacked one of other dogs in the pack. Before long they were all fighting and killing each other. I did the same thing with a group of bandits once. The adaptive AI was super fun to watch, and it gave the world a truly "alive" feeling. You really never knew what situation you were going to stumble upon. (I got the "I wish the whole world was the Zone." ending BTW.)

The first time I beat S.T.A.L.K.E.R., it was unpatched, which caused my ending to suddenly fluctuate to the "I want to be rich" one. That was...unsatisfying. Once things got patched up though, totally different game. I went through and checked out the other endings as well. Good times. And then I followed it with things like the Oblivion Lost mod.

Oh man, I love that game.

IIRC I played through it with the last official patch. I messed with some mods after I beat it, but I didn't find that any really enhanced the experience for me. One of them made blowouts happen like every 10 minutes though and that was pretty damned ridiculous. Mutants, bandits, dogs, and whatever else getting blown all over the place while I hid in wrecked up sheds and bunkers... good times.

That might be Oblivion Lost. It restored a lot of what was originally promised in the game that had to be cut for development reasons. It changed things like turning night into pitch black, where you didn't want to be out of view of a campfire, many more mutants roamed the zone, more weapons and gear, randomly occurring blowouts, etc. It became much harder and way freakier. I loved it.

I can't even remember what ending I got. They were all crazy! I loved the story, it got so bonkers as it developed.

Oblivion Lost sounds awesome. I've still only beaten the game once and it was vanilla without any mods, figured I'd run through it again sometime with Complete or one of the other overhaul mods. Is Oblivion Lost its own thing or does it fit together with other mods?

I figure the game isn't too long either if you're just focusing on the story. The infinite side missions are fluff, but it was fun for awhile and an easy way to get money and explore. It's definitely different than Ubisoft/Bethesda. I'd wager it's only a 10-15 hour game if you just run through the main story?
