Should I Start a 32X Collection?

If you are into collecting complete retail sets for systems then that is an easy one aside from a few expensive titles. Most of the games are actually pretty reasonably priced although many have better ports else where for the same price or cheaper.

I personally have steered clear from collecting for systems that don't have a great game libraries. The 3DO, Jaguar, and 32X all fall into that category for me. More specifically on the 32X front, the system is bulky and kinda ugly (imho), the cable situation is kinda messy, and the carts don't have end labels so the overall the appeal of having a nice little cart only collection on shelf just isn't there. Buying CIB would be much more appealing but then you'd be committed to making room for and spending money on the collection. That's my $0.02 behind why I don't collect for the 32X.

The one game I've always wanted to play on the system though was Star Wars 32X. Maybe I'll get to play that at another members house one day....

As far as enjoyment goes, there's only a small handful of exclusive 32X games that I think are worth playing. And emulation allows one to enjoy those well enough.

If you're just collecting for the sake of collecting, than go for it though.

Speaking as a 3DO, Jaguar and 32x owner and collector, OP, these systems don't have great game libraries ( ), so my interest is in the mystique of the exclusives/upgrades. Even then, a lot of the games are overpriced and overrated, not least of which is Spider-Man: WoF.

Investing in a Mega Everdrive saved me from buying that and others, but if your interest is as a completionist in collecting, I've heard it's one of the easiest to clear.

Thanks for all of the input team. This is some great advice. What I think I'll do is hold onto it for at least a few months to see if I luck into any more good games at good prices. If so, I will start up a collection. If not, I will sell or trade the game (and work toward completing my Atari 7800 collection).

Also, with regard to collecting CIB games, I only really insist on games in that condition where the original case is a "hard" case (i.e., Blu-Ray cases, CD jewel cases, DVD cases, Sega clamshells, etc.). IMO, even well-maintained cardboard boxes start to look pretty rough after a while, and I think a collection of games that shipped in cardboard boxed looks much "cleaner" if it is cart only.

Very good points made in your post and that does make me respect the 32X quite a bit more. Though I'd like to note I think that about half of those games have superior versions available on the Saturn.

Play the Saturn version of Mortal Kombat 2.

Kolibri and Tempo are probably the only 2 games I consider worth owning on the 32x and neither are legendary - they are just the best of a small/bad library.

I am tempted to obtain Kolibri for the killer graphics, but the SHMUP game play has been reviewed as meh. The 32X does have a few exclusive games worth checking out and not that big a library.

Believe it or not 32X Star Wars cannot do full flight movement so it is not near as good as Shadow Squadron. If there is one game to get of the limited 32X library make it Shadow Squadron, a Wing Commander style game with nice explosions.



I own the original HI Definition Graphics Genesis along with the 32X Module.
Own these, all pretty good games with Shadow Squadron by far my favorite:

1. Golf Magazine 36 Hole CIB and a 2nd cart only
2. Shadow Squadron CIB
3. Virtua Racing Deluxe CIB

I also own the Genesis version of Virtua Racing; Sega's ONLY Virtua Processor Chip Genesis game. It holds its own pretty well, but the 32X version definitely better! Surprising how well the game drives even with just the DPad of the Genes controller.

As for CIB, yes the packaging is just cardboard. I obtained sized to fit "comic bags" with resealable 3m tape to protect the box. These are popular in Asian Markets for protecting DVDs and various other media; BookOff uses the bags on everything. The bag works very well, contents inside easy to get to and kept fresh new. The 32X packaging has an inner thicker cardboard tray that sldes out; holding both cart, game manual and 32X catalog underneath.
