Got a request from a friend for a 2-4 player Mario World game.
My first thought was, grab the WII and put New SMB on. Not possible, my niece took it so she could play it with her friends. Next, I turned on my Original Xbox for some Super Mario War. Not good enough. Gotta be progressive and co-op without guns. What are my options? Has anyone tried a recent version of that 2 player co-op romhack of SMW? What about that 2 player hack of Mario 64? Did they fix the camera problems?
Just want to co-op hotseat game where the physics are similar to Super Mario (powerups and stomping enemies). Is my only option New SMB? Do I need to get a WII-U for Mario Maker?
Hotseat (couch) Mario or similar
Re: Hotseat (couch) Mario or similar
Well, YES, but Mario Maker doesn't have 2-player co-op. But the Wii U has New SMB U / Super Luigi as well as Super Mario 3D World. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is awesome. And the U plays Wii games, so NSMB Wii and DKC Returns.Anapan wrote:Do I need to get a WII-U for Mario Maker?
Re: Hotseat (couch) Mario or similar
Of course I've been thinking of getting a WiiU for a while. When I bought the Wii years ago I bought all the best games. I think I've logged 60 hours on it. It might be my best option, but 2.5D mario isn't exactly what we're looking for.
We've really been enjoying passing the controller back and forth on SNES. All-stars and world. Yoshi's island (with the volume down), etc.
Is there any other game for any system or PC that approximates the physics and control of NES or SNES Mario, but also offers co-op or even 16x9 split-screen?
I got NSMB Wii back, along with SOTC HD for my PS3 (been wondering where it went). Is the WiiU NSMB/Luigi that much better? I found that the NSMB Wii levels started to get frustrating and cluttered during the castles, with the rolling wheels and all - the co-op was just frustrating during those. We mutually decided to stay dead to pass them without killing each other. Just looking for another option/opinion.

I just want to add that the multi-player in this game is really, really fun and really, really well-implemented.Ziggy587 wrote:Super Mario 3D World

I think NSMB Wii U is better, but it's still really awkward in 2 player. Mario 3D World was much more accomodating to multiplayer imo, as you got in each others way less.Anapan wrote:Of course I've been thinking of getting a WiiU for a while. I can't think of any game that really imitates Mario and has co-op. I think most people didn't see the point in trying to outdo Mario really.
Yoshi's Woolly World on Wii U has proven to be a very fun multiplayer Wii U game for me and my girlfriend. We also played through Kirby's Epic Yarn on Wii together and enjoyed that too, although you'll probably screw each other over more in that one.
All of the old Kirby games make for some quite fun 2 player co-op. As well as Epic Yarn, Return to DreamLand on Wii, Dream Land 3 on SNES and Kirby Superstar on SNES all offer fun co-op experiences.
Re: Hotseat (couch) Mario or similar
Ah, I thought you were only looking for games that you both could play simultaneously. If you enjoy passing the controller back and forth (I miss those days) then Mario Maker would be a good thing. The game comes with a bunch of Nintendo made levels, and then there's an infinite amount of community made levels. If you check out the Mario Maker thread here on RB, there's a ton of great levels posted. You might also have a blast building levels together.Anapan wrote:We've really been enjoying passing the controller back and forth on SNES. All-stars and world. If you enjoyed playing Yoshi's Island together, then Yoshi's Woolly World on the U should be a lot of fun for you too. And you don't have to play with the volume down.
Have you played the Donkey Kong Country games? I'm assuming so, since you said you were playing SNES games, I'm assuming DKC is included in the etc. I'm also assuming you've played DKC Returns on the Wii. Tropical Freeze on the U is even better, in pretty much every way.Anapan wrote:Is there any other game for any system or PC that approximates the physics and control of NES or SNES Mario, but also offers co-op or even 16x9 split-screen?
I loved the NSMB Wii levels, but the NSMB U levels do feel a bit more "open," if that's the right word.Anapan wrote:Is the WiiU NSMB/Luigi that much better? I found that the NSMB Wii levels started to get frustrating and cluttered during the castles, with the rolling wheels and all
I hear ya, the co-op can be hard with the NSMB games. You and the person you're playing with really have to be in sync or you end up playing against each other.Anapan wrote:the co-op was just frustrating during those. We mutually decided to stay dead to pass them without killing each other.
Yeah, if you found the co-op in NSMB to be frustrating at times, you'll love how well the co-op in 3D World works. Since you're in a 3D environment, you're not always on top of each other, messing up each other's jumps and whatnot. It's not full blown 3D like Super Mario 64 because of the way the camera works, it's sort of a perfect middle ground between side scrolling Mario and 3D Mario.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I just want to add that the multi-player in this game is really, really fun and really, really well-implemented.Ziggy587 wrote:Super Mario 3D World

Yeah I am a firm advocate for the wiiu love because of local coop
Another suggestion would be for guacamelee. Great platforming and combat.

I guess that settles it; I'll grab myself a WiiU - I already wanted one for Mario Maker, Splatoon, and Smash bros. I never really looked into Guacamelee because the art style put me off, but the 2 player looks really great! Thanks for the answers, guys!

Excellent! Add another to the converted. You will love the system and be sure to go crazy posting in the mario maker thread lm I will be sure to play all your stuff and give great feedback! Plus, guacamelee is on there and it is great. Also, don't disregard games like nintendoland. The zelda and Metroid games have great coop and are a lot of fun!

Re: Hotseat (couch) Mario or similar
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Kirby! We all play it all the time, because my nephew has been playing it since he was 4 years old. Different versions of it are installed on all the systems. They are so much fun co-op. Whenever it's on, Deakon jumps in, takes all the best abilities and uses the 2nd player as a weapon. Then when the boss battles arrive he hangs back in the corner until the end and makes the kill-shot.
