First Saturn Shmup

Post by lost_within »

I have all the dreamcast shmups burnt, ive owned a few...and tonight im starting to get back into collecting what i want which are shooters and fighters, more so...shooters. Being as i didnt wanna spend 200$ for silvergun *had a burnt copy...sold the saturn, awesome game though* i looked on youtube and ran across an interesting thing called:

Sengoku Blade

Being as how i didnt want to wait to get it from japan i found ONE guy on ebay that had it for 60$ free shipping, in the us, with spine card and reg card. So...i snagged it. I dont mind paying 100+ for shooters, as i love them all. But do you guys know of some good shooters that are around the 50-70$ mark on the saturn. Off top your head? I dont want to go on ebay and copy paste EVERY shooter there is.....
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

I never got to play sengoku blade (and many other shmups) when I collected and played saturn. Maybe after college when I have more time and money I'll dive back in.

Yakumo has a fantastic series of videos revolving around Sega systems. One of his better ones is the Saturn Shooting Special. Where he reviews and shows video from every Saturn Shooter.

http://www.segagagadomain.com/retro_core__info-sss.htm

It's 3 hours long, but endlessly fascinating. I actually highly recommend all of his videos. I found out about quite a few hidden gems thanks to him.

My suggestion would be In The Hunt. It's a side scrolling submarine shooter that is more than a little like Metal Slug in style... which is to say, it's awesome. Ebay starts at $25 complete. Enjoy.

I unfortunately don't have many Saturn shmups. Chatting Parodius and Steam Heart's (Har Har) are the only ones I can think of. off the top of my head, to be honest.

I'd have more if they weren't so ridiculously expensive and MAME couldn't replicate them good enough. Sure, I'd love to be able to play Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang without all the sound glitches and occasional slowdown they have in MAME... but is it worth $50-100? I doubt it.

As for my recommendation, I'd go with Sexy Parodius. I really want that game, and you can find it in the $50-70 range (sometimes lower if you get lucky). It's Gradius with a sense of humor; hard to beat that. I'm also sure the Cotton series would be worth the $50+, as I would definitely buy it if I had enough money. Twinkle Star Sprites is also a great head-to-head shmup that I love to play, but I'm sure you already have it on the Dreamcast. (As you can see, I have a fondness for "cute 'em ups".)

You could also go with one of those Capcom Collections; I can't remember what volumes have what exactly, but I'm pretty sure the first has 1941 and it's variants, the second Ghosts and Ghouls series, the fifth is the Street Fighter II set, and the third and fourth I'm not sure of, but I'm pretty sure they include shmups.

Edit: Oh yeah, and "In The Hunt". I personally would like to get it for the PlayStation (so I can play it on the PS3), but the Saturn port is nearly the same and I sure wouldn't turn it down if I found the right price. It's made by Irem (R-Type) and the art is by Nazca (Metal Slug); that's a hard combination to beat.

Here's a few of the relatively cheaper Saturn shmups i'd reccomend;

Blast Wind - Enjoyable & intense vertical shooter from Technosoft, unfourtunatly it suffers from ebay price gouging (currently one going for BIN @ $199) but you should be able to find it much cheaper if you keep an eye out, I got my copy for just $60 a year or so back. Video;

Detana Twinbee Deluxe - Great collection of Konami's two cute arcade Twinbee shooters, really cheap to obtain. Video;

Hyper Duel - Really enjoyable horizontal shooter, however it is quite rare but despite this it can still be had for relatively cheap if you keep an eye out. Video;

Layer Section - good vertical shooter than provides you with a weapon to shoot beneath the layer your ship is on, can be had for very cheap. Ignore the much poorer Layer Section II. Video;

Skull Fang - pretty good Data East vertical shmup with a unique throttle system where you can increase or decrease the speed of your ship. Can be a bit pricey in comparison to others i've listed. Video;

Soukyugurentai - Amazing vertical shooter from Raizing, easily one of my favourites on the Saturn, plus it can be had for quite cheap. Video;

*edit, great purchase with Sengoku Blade man, such an enjoyable shooter with a ton of replay value.

Where's Doc Fugue when you need him...

Agree with Bootaay - My favourites are RS, Soukyugurentai, Dodon Pachi and Strikers 1945. Don Pachi and Batsugun are also excellent. Don't know how much they cost tho...

I miss Fugue as well. I don't think he liked dealing with us amateurs! :)

If you're looking for cheap and good, there were 2 good stateside releases:
Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack (layer section in Japan). I'm speaking without citation, but I imagine Galactic Attack is cheaper than the japanese counterpart.

Blast wind was mentioned above. It's funny; during my college years, videogame depot couldn't get rid of these at $18. $18 for a saturn shmup! But once they did run out, prices soared.
