Yeah that's what i noticed about your video. I tend to play super-defensively, hanging out at the bottom of the screen. I have experimented with playing more aggressively, and some of the bullet patterns actually seem easier to dodge playing up close. But, my reaction time also has to be much quicker to stay alive up there.

Both mushi games do this, stage 3 ends up being a lot harder than it really should be. Stage 4 in both tend to be rhythm like areas expecting you to sweep bak and forth.

Do you mean if you stay at the bottom and play defensively it's harder?

Harder is subjective; but you will definitely see more bullets if you hang at the bottom. It takes your bullets longer to get to the enemies if you're at the bottom - so they shoot longer / more and you have to evade more. If you can be on them when they spawn it's to your advantage. The downside is you don't have as much time to react to bullets mid-screen.

KP is spot-on w/stage 4 - on that stage it's much tougher to play up high; mainly because of the large orb turrets on the sides that shoot massive purple circles; and the caterpillars that spawn from the grasshopper carcasses. Those will spawn on top of you, or underneath you, if you're mid-screen or higher. For those stages it's lower third and sweeping back and forth with the occasional "fake"; a slight motion from left to right, but quickly back left to suck in those wasps that move straight toward you very quickly and in droves, you need to suck in 2 lines before sweeping back and forth, the rest of the stage is a pretty clean sweeping motion.

I feel a new PB coming this evening with all these tips. Plus, this is just great:

I'm happy to be part of a conversation with this sentence. I hope to be able to take your advice for stage 4, but my goal for today is just to make it to the stage 3 boss.

After eight months it's time to go back. Even my best score in March doesn't compare to this.

56,924,315 - ExedExes - Model 3 - Stage 4 - Reco/N - MAME

Is the scoring in this similar to Deathsmiles? The focus on both games seems to be on collecting gems/skulls which in turn multiply your score. I know the counter color-shot type mechanic is only here. It's a good one for a week long competition, and was also by far the most popular month this year @ SOTM.

Let's go Model 3!

I wouldn't compare it to Deathsmiles. The only similarity is in using the right shot to get the higher valued gem/skull - in that regard, similar.

Beyond that they are completely different.

DS requires activating your hyper and timing it well; ie in the first half of the stage or sooner, and on a level 2 or 3 preferred to ensure more bullets and enemies. Once your 1,000 gem meter runs down to 0 you have to build it up again from 0.

Mushi - there is no hyper, rather a running and building multiplier. That multiplier builds faster with bigger gems and collecting them closest to their location. The multiplier lowers a bit with bombing and lowers significantly with dying.

If you die on a stage - you lose all gems collected up to that point for stage end bonus; you also lose out on "no miss" bonus.

Lazer - Stage 3 is a wall in this game, but once you get it...you get it.

1st part you can focus on large enemies spawning on alternate sides of the screen, left side, then some mid-screen popcorn, fairly relaxed, then a large on the right side. The thing about these enemies, and all large enemies really, is to hold tight in the pocket in front of them - the bullets will cancel.

Mid boss is pretty straightforward and manageable - bomb if you have to, but I suggest not bombing at all. Die a few times if you have to, but get in the habit of no-bombing him to keep your multiplier high through the stage.

2nd part is more difficult - you have large enemies now on both sides. Compounding matters, the large cocoons shoot long diagonal bullets from both directions. The key here is to take out one, then the other. A lot of times it seems overwhelming and you find yourself stuck in the middle, or you bomb. Get in the habit of staying left or right, kill it as it spawns, quick sweep to the other side and get that one.

Now, Lazer - when you get all that down we should really talk about the sparkling eggs, cuz that's where the big money is.
