Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
I had a large NES collection when I was younger, along with SNES and a smaller N64 collection. The NES collection got thrown out due to it becoming damaged. But as I got older and started earning money I started to backfill stuff I always wanted to play. I got another NES and refilled what I owned and what I wanted to own (the other Mega Man games, for example), and then moved on to the PSX and PS2 RPGs that I missed by being a Nintendo fan. Then when I graduated college and got a great job I started to really get into a "collector" mode. However, I never purchase anything that I don't intend on playing. This has led to me getting into certain genres I was never that into when I was younger (Shmups and non SF2 fighters in particular). But I refuse to purchase anything just to have. I fully intend to beat every game I own. Not go for the 100%, but definately beat.

^^^ Yeah I don't buy anything that doesn't at least look like it'll be fun. Mostly I buy old stuff I've played before but I browse mobygames and look for stuff that looks fun and has a decent rating and I'll add it to my list. And If I'm at a store and find a game for under $5 that looks good, has a box etc I'll usually buy it. Of course I do end up with some crap games that way (heavy nova) but I don't spend rediculous amounts of money just to have a complete collection. . . I don't need Doom for 32X.
Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
I consider myself a collector. I do enjoy searching for rare games, be it online, at pawn shops, flea markets or even retail stores. It's just the trill of the hunt that gets me. There's nothing quite like finding a $60 PS1 game at a Good Will, or a $150 PS2 game for $10 at a pawn shop.
I'll rarely spend top dollar for a game I won't play. As nice as it would be to have Guardian Heroes all factory sealed, I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of playing it. (Unless I had two copies, which is usually the route I'll take if I can afford it.)
I also consider myself a video game investor, always looking for places selling games on the cheap so I can flip them elsewhere. I also have a box with a whole bunch of factory sealed games that I hope will just collect dust and value.
So, yeah, for the most part I only get games so that I can play them or flip them.

I collect, but I tend to go for genres, so my collection includes both greats as well as a lot of garbage. Still, I'm gonna at least spend a little time with all of them, so yeah, I play too.

Ahh back from work. Investing is a great term to use the7k. I think when I sold all my stuff, I probably made well over $1200. Of course that was selling most of it separated on ebay, and to this day I hate going to the fucking post office lol.
And phil i might be asking you to mod some controllers for me so I can use them on an Xbox. I seriously fucked up a first attempt of a softmod, but I know what I did wrong, so I kinda want to try it again.

i am a bargain and modded collector. there is something to said for having the original media and the system to play on it (which no classics systems are actually very expensive)... the good control and no glitches is worth the effort alone in my opinion. the trick is find places for good deals and hidden treasures. i use craigslist, pawn shops, and some online places. then when the games are inexpensive its worth dropping the money for the originals you love are want to have in your library. in the meantime, play your emulators, modded systems and enjoy doing so.

p.s. last tip to enjoy having modded systems and burned media is to take the little bit of time and effort to buy some cd labels (120 labels for $20) and print your own labels from http://www.cdcovers.cc/covers and enjoy making a wonderful looking collection of games that look like their originals. i really enjoy my dreamcast, saturn, xbox360, and ps1 backups looking awesome and almost original, not plain and with my crappy handwriting on them.

Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
yeh I have to say I do think I come more under the term 'collector' than 'gamer' these days maybe - there are a TONNE of games I havent completed yet that I own, but I still keep getting stuff - here are just some of them:
Twilight Princess
Okami Wii
The Force Unleashed
Viewtiful Joe
God Hand
R-Type Final
Ikaruga (well ok I accept I might never complete this lol)
I was piling up all of my fighting games 2 nights ago in preparation for the monumentous coming of SFIV on friday, and I couldnt believe the amount of SNK fighters I have for PS2 alone (let alone having everything possible (.cdi) on DC (including some single-disc NeoGeo emu ones)) - and I have pretty much completed NONE of them with all characters - I still love playing them the odd time though - and I just actually love watching their intros (sad I know). When I add the ones I have on Wii and also Samurai Shodown II on 360, its a lot of em lol.
on a sidenote - I was playing SVC Chaos there last night - I actually really do like it although I think the Capcom characters feel a bit tall or something - but I think the hits feel very 'thuddy' and satisfying, and I love the dark richness to the colours and the intro movie is great.
I also just seem to collect sticks (and sometimes pads) and converters arbitrarily ehehe

Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
I'm migrating most of my collected games into digital format so what I have left is actually decreasing all the time. It's always good to have a physical copy of something but it's not that important to me anymore.

Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
I'm not a collector anymore. I used be but what had changed my mind was I stumbled on a large collection of dreamcast games with the system at a local gamestore had about 100 games a lot of the rarities for 75 percent off and I only spent about 200 but I had trade bucks so I didn't spend any cash. Well I went on ebay and I saw someone who was selling pretty much all the rare fighters and shooters, the bidding was already to high so i sent him a comment on a nice collection and then I asked him how long and how much did all this cost him he said 3 years and over 5 thousand dollars for his collection!!! I have 2 children and I'm married as I'm getting older I realized its not worth it. All i have now is a xbox and I'm just getting what I can because gamestop will soon no longer carry it anymore. I also have a nes and 64 but those systems belong to my kids and after I get what I want for my xbox which is only 10 more games then I'll start getting what I used to play on my kids nes. I only want what I used to play as a kid not go nuts anymore and try to get everything its just not worth it.

Re: Is anyone on here NOT a collector?
I guess i could say im a collector more than playing these days. Example....we went into a local fleamarket and walked around, i found a nice older lady selling games. Not really cheap...found a 32x with cables, no box, for 15$ and didnt get it...due to my box need. Thats hint one to me that im a collector all my classic systems...have the box. Next was...instead of buying any saturn games, sega cd, the 32x....i kept walking and found a little junk corner, my gf looked down at the ground and went hey....look at that! It was a brand new still in the plastic, all paper work....goldstar 3do controller. So i got that for 5$, which ebay sells them 15-30$ so price was good, but the fact that i gave up games...for a 3do controller, due to it being NEW. I DONT EVEN HAVE A 3do!
On a side note...something funny...the controller was at ebgames? at some point for 24$...they had scratched it out...and put...FREE. THAT goes to show you how well the 3do did...they were just GIVING its shit away lol.
