^ Yeah those types of games come fairly close. Though most (if not all, it's been awhile) of those have an XP system with the exception of maybe Centy.... This really changes the gameplay significantly as grinding because a crucial element. Contrast this to Zelda which is completely streamlined and can be rolled through quickly.

Oh, and Defenders of Oasis is actually a turn-based Dragon Quest style game. It's not even technically related to the other Oasis games beyond the fact that it was made by Sega and has Oasis in the (North American) title.

I guess ultimately what I'm saying is that I'm surprised there aren't more Zelda-ish games coming out of Japan, either past or present. Especially given the enormous popularity of the series. There are far more "Ys clones" than "Zelda clones" for instance.

Well...we know which series you prefer. Maybe Japanese developers just have more refined tastes...

I'd guess that the RPG mechanics are what drew sales, with Zelda keeping going because Nintendo.

interesting:

The original Street Fighter was ported to the Amiga by developer Tiertex and publisher US Gold. They then took this engine and created their own sequel called Human Killing Machine that was released as either an official spin-off of Street Fighter or an unofficial sequel in 1989.

lol nice character designs. I love weird spin-off shit like that.

Reminds me of Wonder Boy in Monster Land - the Famicom port was edited and re-titled Saiyuuki World, which ended up with its own sequel independent from the Wonder Boy series know as Saiyuuki World II (aka Whomp 'Em in the US). Video games are weird.

I actually have Street Fighter 1 on C64. You don't wanna play it.

I have played SF1 on DOS. Not good. I'm still curious about the Amiga version because some small part of me wants to believe there's a "good" version of SF1. And as far as Human Killing Machine goes... I want it.

I dunno if Street Fighter 1 is good in any respect. At least one Capcom compilation has the emulated arcade version. I don't recall being impressed.

I have yet to play Fighting Street on TurboGrafx CD. I image that the controls are better than the computer versions. I've heard it's still kinda crappy though.
