noiseredux Presents THE MONTH OF HORROR (2015) (remake)

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I have had a very crap-tiddily-dappy week at work, but I'm feeling better and all caught up with the posts now (bravo, Ack), so I had time to finish this.

TerrorVision
Image

TerrorVision is about an alien garbage heap/pet/ball of slime, that in the process of being destroyed gets dematerialized and accidentally gets broadcast into some poor yuppie’s satellite dish. Chaos and slimy deaths ensue.

Image
Actually the characters were already pretty slimy to begin with. The monster
just helped them along into their more natural state of being.

This is probably one of the strangest horror comedies I have ever witnessed, and that’s saying a lot. Just about everything here is completely over-the-top and exaggerated: The characters, the acting, the monster, the 80’s – my God, the 80’s – even the props. It feels like the goal here was to take everything and crank it up to 11. If that’s true, than I give them an ‘A’ for effort.

Except for the plot. The sort of fumbled the ball there.

Image
Not being able to decide on which spectrum of light to use, the filmmakers just chose “All of them.”

The characters here aren’t so much characters as they are punch-lines. Not only are their personalities exaggerated to the nth degree, but to top it off every single one of them is also horribly, annoyingly shallow. You’re almost ecstatic when the creature finally shows up and starts turning each one into a pile of sticky goop, if for no other reason than you won’t have to listen to them any longer.

Image
Which slime ball am I’m supposed to be rooting for in this picture?

As for the monster itself, I’m not sure I feel about it. On the one hand it’s clear that they went to great lengths to make sure it was… unique. I do enjoy the fact that the creature is asymmetrical and that such attention to detail was taken to make sure the beast looked as sticky and grotesque as possible on what was clearly a very modest budget. On the other hand, the little bugger just looks a bit too goofy for my tastes (at least when it’s not turning someone into gelatinous goo.)…

Actually, no. Scratch that. It still looks goofy, even then.

Image
A face not even a mother could love.

The content of this movie is kind of all over the place. It’s an odd mix of grotesque horror, slapstick comedy, youthful fart jokes, and adult humor. It kind of makes me wonder how many re-writes this thing went through and what the hell they were shooting for. There’s a very clear kid-focus, with the younger brother Sherman being the main protagonist, yet at the same time the house is decked out in erotic pop art and the parents openly admit to being swingers, going so far as to bring another couple home so they can have some fun times in the hot tub.

I’m confused movie. Who the hell was your target audience for this exactly? Did you even know? Could you not decide?

Image
An accurate depiction of my thought process as I tried to answer those questions.

The plot for TerrorVision makes little sense and the acting is so over the top that you’ll cringe as soon as someone utters their first syllable. There’s a bit of a clichéd plot twist at the end and the juxtaposition of child hero and adult humor makes you wonder what the filmmakers were aiming for. But it does have an interesting monster and an excessive level of weirdness and can end up being fun… as long as you don’t go in expecting too much fun.

Yes! Michi's back! Great review! (Although, I will probably skip Terrorvision, even if it does have a great title.)

Last night, my wife and I watched:

Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972) - Despite its title, this proto-slasher film really does not have much to do with Christmas. (I certainly wouldn't consider it a Christmas movie.) Moreover, and most interestingly, the film stars a large number of Warhol Superstars, and the movie makes some attempts at being art. Although some are successful, most of those attempts come off as amateurish, however, and the film does not really succeed at being scary or entertaining. (I fell asleep during it, but, to be fair, I had caught a 6:00 AM flight that morning.) It does have a pretty great poster, though, and the villain is pretty cool. The blood effects are also shockingly realistic for its era. (The film is in the public domain, and you can watch it online. I watched it on a DVD collection of public domain slasher films.)

does the same collection have Bucket Of Blood, Driller Killer and Drive-In Massacre? If so, I have that as well. I also think I have Terror Vision on VHS. :|

Those Mill Creek packs of flicks are great for having a bunch of stuff on hand, but the prints are so godawful you can barely see what's happening. At least that was the case when I watched Silent Night, Bloody Night. Sort of an early giallo feel to that one, imo.

Sadly, no. It has:

Deep Red (a/k/a The Hatchet Murders a/k/a easily the best film in the collection)
Don't Look In the Basement
Scream Bloody Murder
The Severed Arm
Silent Night, Bloody Night

Agreed. This one wasn't too bad, but I have found that some of those collections are not worth the effort.

yup! I finally convinced my wife to watch Bucket Of Blood but the audio was so horrible that it was impossible to follow the dialogue. Bummer.

Get a good print. Bucket of Blood is really great, and my wife loves it.

EDIT: There are some really great public domain horror films (Bucket of Blood, Carnival of Souls, Night of the Living Dead, etc.), but I have not found any collection that really does them justice. Does anyone know of any?

No, I have a Mill Creek collection with Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead(along with a ton of other stuff), but it's all pretty atrocious. I'd have less of an issue if they had gotten a subtitle track, as it's the audio that really gets me.

I still want to watch Silent Night, Bloody Night. And TerrorVision. That movie got release as part of a two-pack with The Video Dead a couple years back.

FUN FACT: Mary Woronov (i.e., Calamity Jane from Death Race 2000) is in both Silent Night, Bloody Night and Terrorvision. (She's also in House of the Devil! Amazing!)

Played through The 7th Guest at the start of the month and enjoyed it immensely. The only puzzle I couldn't solve was the microscope puzzle where the AI was just ridiculous. Just used the library to skip that one.

Other than that, I haven't had much of a chance to be gaming lately, but did pick up The Evil Within and played the first couple of chapters. Enjoyable so far.

Been rewatching Twin Peaks, an episode before bed all month long and still love it. It just feels like the perfect fall show for me. Can't wait until the continuation starts happening next year!
