YES! I bought some Count Chocula from Target the other day, and although my wife scolded me a bit, the children loved it.

.....

Last night, my wife and I were (un)pleasantly surprised by:

Oculus (2013). In it, a brother and a sister watch their father murder their mother, and the children blame it on an antique mirror their father purchased shortly after moving into their new family home. The children resolve to destroy the object, and as adults they set about on their task. The mirror, however, does not go down without a fight. By bending reality and inducing hallucinations, the cursed mirror fights desperately for its survival, and before long it is difficult for the viewer (and the characters) to distinguish between illusion and reality.

My wife and I went into this film expecting pretty-standard "bump in the night" fare, but about half-way through the film, my wife looked at me and said, "This film is legitimately scary." I agreed wholeheartedly, and I highly recommend it. (Also, it is streaming on Netflix; so, those of you with the service can watch it instantly.)

Sleepaway Camp

Well, that was...different. I'm not quite sure how to put down my thoughts about this one without giving away the major plot point at the end. It's got an interesting approach to the slasher, that's definitely true. Bottom line, try to watch this one without having the ending spoiled for you. Trust me, it's worth it. From what I've read of other folks thoughts, there are a lot of opinions on the big twist and whether it is demeaning certain groups of people. What I can say though is that this is no way to run a summer camp. Some of the counselors are good, but quite a few are inept, the guy running the place is a crook and might be a pedophile, the head cook is DEFINITELY a pedophile, and the rest of the cooks are stereotypes.

This movie is also surprisingly nasty with its kills despite not being particularly graphic during the actual acts(though the corpses shown in the aftermath are pretty grotesque). Drownings, stabbings, death by bees, arrows, maiming with boiling water...heck, one unlucky camper even gets raped with a hot curling iron! That's just cruel, even if she is the primary antagonist at the camp. While there can be a variety of morals taken from the movie depending on how you look at it, perhaps the most important one is "Don't be a jerk!"

Ultimately this movie is pretty crazy but a surprising amount of fun. At times it felt like it was going to be just another Friday the 13th rip-off, but Sleepaway Camp is anything but. It occasionally seems to verge into parody territory, but it nails how to do the slasher and gives red herrings that the characters react to in the worst possible ways. And the ending...well, it's a challenge depending on how you view it, most certainly. Wow.

yeah the first movie is crazy. The 2nd and 3rd are def more generic slasher style films - but they are great in their own right. Return... is pretty terrible.

Oh man i totally forgot to post anything here. Horror related stuff i been watching/playing since end of september so here's so far

Image

Well im going backwards starting from the most recent one. Not a scary film, unless you have a phobia with Adam Sandler, but is still a funny movie. Watched it with some friends last week and was a good fun but i didnt love it like my friends did... is basically a Adam Sandler film... but animated.. and with monsters. Seriously all his friends do voice work for all the gang in this movie but they fit the roles. The only problems i got with the film are just nippicks from me like i feel is too modern, like how a 1880 vampire will write a history of how she fell in love with her husband and uses the word zing for that feeling, and the music is bit out of place for my taste in some places but that's to be expected. Overall still got some good humor and is a good watch for the season.

Image

So we have this trend with my friends to watch bad horror movies to make fun of them and this one fits the norm quite well. It's full of cliches and is predictable as hell, has unnecesary jumpscares, thats the main theme on modern films lately. Lame movie to watch alone but not awfull to watch on a group, still you can skip this one.

Image

Now this film really surprised me since with the trailer i was expecting the usual stupid jumpscares, the monster that wont stop showing, silly stuff that is scary for some reason... but the trailer does not do the movie justice. I do not now how to write this without spoiling so i just quote IMDb "Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt finds a box of super 8 home movies that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back to the 1960s" I would definetly recomend this film.

Image

Now talking about being surprised. This movie is not amazing or incredible but it is interesting and diferent... having 5 people talking through a webcam on a skype call and see them die on a pixelated mess one by one may sound stupid but since the people you on cam are actully awfull people it kinda becomes catartic when you see it. I seriously believe this is a great film for an anti ciber-bullying add.

Now as far as videogames go i recently played dead space 2 and left my toughs on the games beaten threat. I have the perfect game for this night, i got alien isolation and im gonna rewatch the films to set the tone for the night.

Slumber Party Massacre II

Oh dear. Set several years after the original Slumber Party Massacre, young Courtney Bates has grown up. She's on the verge of adulthood, plays in a rock band, and plans to spend the weekend with friends at a family condo and enjoy some serious alone time with the hunk she's be dreaming of. Unfortunately she's no longer dreaming about him though. Instead her nightmares focus on a crazed rockstar with a drill guitar to likes to penetrate people with both his lyrics and his instrument. Is it all just in her head? Is it really happening? Is she on drugs, or in an asylum, or back home in bed? Who knows?! What matters is that it's damned ridiculous and yet still ends up fun once it finally gets going!

That said, it takes a while. Most of this movie is build up consisting of fan service and dream sequences. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as Courtney's band mates include the likes of a Playboy Playmate, but I found myself a bit bored because I thought there were no stakes. Seriously, she sleeps, she has a bad dream, she gets scared, but otherwise that was it. Even when her dreams begin to manifest into hallucinations while she is awake, the escalation didn't seem like enough. After a while it became, "Oh, another dream. This time with a raw chicken" or "This time with a bathtub," or finally "This time with a huge zit." Meanwhile she's practically drooling over a guy she knows while her friends write songs and loudly have sex behind closed doors. Until the boy Courtney has been after arrives. And then gets killed. With a drill through the chest.

Boom, suddenly there are stakes. And not only are there stakes, but the guy on the other end of the drill manifests in full force, and he is AMAZING. The Driller Killer, as he is known, is a psychopathic rocker in the best possible way, who talks in lyrics, drinks heavily, and dances for his victims before going right for their hearts. There's a freaking dance number in the middle of the movie, which the killer starts by breaking the fourth wall, all while the remaining survivors are freaking out and trying to crawl away. They are screaming and sobbing, and this asshole is having the best possible time but steadily getting closer! He's worth watching the movie for by himself!

Sure, it's dumb. Sure, it drags. I don't care, the Driller Killer made up for all of it. There's also quite a few winks and nods to other horror movies in here too, like a pair of cops named Officers Kreuger and Vorhees, and of course our dear final girl Bates. Haha, oh man, I had a good time with this one.

Last night, my wife and I watched:

Image

Berberian Sound Studio (2012). In it, the inimitable Toby Jones plays an English sound engineer who slowly loses his grip with reality while working on an (apparently) extremely graphic giallo film. The film does not contain a drop of blood, but it is nonetheless a surreal and unsettling film that practically command multiple viewings. I am not quite sure I would categorize it as horror, however, although it is certainly about horror films (and it undoubtedly recognizes how much sound editing contributes to a horror film). I nonetheless recommend it, and anyone with Netflix can watch it instantly.

Slumber Party Massacre III

The first Slumber Party Massacre was a parody of the slasher genre that knew exactly what it was making fun of. The second Slumber Party Massacre was a rock and roll party that had a good time with what it was. The third Slumber Party Massacre just feels generic after the previous entries. It has the weakest villain, the dumbest characters, and the weakest and most obvious red herrings. I feel like things have gone downhill here from the satire, parody, and at times outright wackiness of the previous films into...well...blandness and stereotype. This movie just felt bland to me.

In this entry, Jackie Cassidy's family is out looking at houses in a different part of the country, so Jackie decides to have her friends come over and have a party! No boys allowed, of course, but seeing as nobody can ever keep anything in their pants in these movies, the guys wind up over at the house anyway. Also there is a creepy neighbor watching the action through a telescope and a weirdo wandering around outside trying to return a pocketbook in the worst possible way. That's when the killings start, all because our killer was apparently sexually abused as a young boy by his cop uncle. The evil Uncle Billy has now killed himself, triggering our killer's psycho switch, and the cops won't listen to the girls' pleas for help.

Here's the problem: this movie does nothing to stand out from the rest of its genre. The characters make some dumb moves, and the acting isn't always great, but it is at least competent. In fact, competent describes how I feel about the film. It's middle-of-the-road, not worth the hate I'd fire off at something like Devil Story but not worth the praise I would give The Prowler. It feels instead like this entry is just stale. We're not down to the level of Jason Takes Manhattan territory. Instead we're treading water at mediocrity. Hopefully the Sorority House Massacre series does things better.

Well, that finishes off this leg of the absolutely massive Massacre series. There is a lot more of these movies to check out though.
