Well, almost always.

Sometimes the RPG elements are so muted that they're more decorative than anything. A lot of Capcom's CPS1/2 beat 'em ups that had leveling felt that way to me.

But yeah, after playing through SPvTW a few times, I came to realize that leveling systems are usually a detriment.

Along the same line, I'm in japan right now, and naturally I'll be doing a bit of game hunting. I can look for it if you like.

Is Fatal Labyrinth the first Japanese roguelike? I can't find any earlier ones but it wouldn't surprise me if there were some obscure titles on the PC-88 or X1 or whatever.

As far as I know it is. Dragon Crystal was released a month later, with Cave Noire appearing a few months after that.

That statement of theirs has bothered me for awhile because they've hit the same wall with other franchises and made the effort to find the talent that could do the job. Look at Metroid? Or Luigi's Mansion? Wario Land? Solid 3rd party developers took those premium but neglected IPs and built some amazing stuff.

If Nintendo doesn't know what to do, then they should dig up the remnants of Sega's AM2 development group if they are available and let them run wild. Give us F-Zero GX2 (The not completely impossibly hard edition!) or failing that, we know that Retro would be up to the task.

Nintendo could do so much for their brand if they'd get back to publishing games that aren't just Mario and Zelda. As much as I love those two franchises, I'd empty my bank account for a return to the days when they had dozens of IPs rolling simultaneously.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah I figured those were the first three. Then came the Mystery Dungeon series.

Have you noticed that GameFAQs now has a "roguelike" selector when searching for games? I like that.

I hadn't noticed it, but I'm glad they added it in. The genre has really grown in the last few years, it deserves a divergent classification in search engines.

Speaking of, I actually tried the first Izuna out last night. I beat the first two gods in about two hours, and so far it's a pretty fun roguelike. Being able to keep your levels if you die, and not having to worry about starving, really makes the game funner than usual.

Is there an existing roguelike thread on this board? If not we should start a thread dedicated to the genre. Gotta get these wimps to play something actually challenging. ;p

Surprisingly, no, at least not that I remember. We've talked about them a bit in related areas, but I don't think any dedicated threads have popped up. I'd say doing one in the RPG subforum would make sense, but the basic idea of a roguelike has spread in recent years to other genres. Hell, I got a kick out of Tower of Guns earlier this year, and that was an FPS based on roguelike design.
